Ugh, I'm going to have to put down my cat this weekend...

It's practically 3 AM by this point, I finish gaming because something screwed me over and i needed to finish it, so when I get upstairs, something smells off. As I walk over to a table to set my laptop down, I'm wondering what I stepped on, which seemed soft. It was my cats tail I now see after getting a light on, he's laying in a pile of his own excrement, half under a chair. So I move him into the bathroom where I can contain him and clean up the carpets before he makes any more of a mess, and I go to check on him in the bathroom, and he's now half under the bathtub because it rises off the ground, and is crapping even more all over the floor and acting crazy... I've had this cat for about a decade now, but he's just not in any shape to go on. He's barely skin and bones, nothing he eats fills him up, he pulls his hair out all the time, and now this...So this weekend, it's off to the Animal Hospital... Flood, have you ever had to put down a faithful pet?

  • I've lost my most faithful African Grey Parrot because my little cousins threw rocks at him, he got so stressed out that he started having a seizure and my cousins kept throwing rocks at him while he slowly passed away. The worst part is, I was out West working and they were looking after him. They never told me he died until two months later. I found him dead and they confessed to the crime when I showed them my fists. They saved up 2000 dollars to pay for what he cost me. But they could never replace the good times I had with him.

    • I've had 2 dogs. The first we had to put down when she was 13, and the second died when he was 2 after raiding some prescription medicine.

    • I have a cat, too, she's now 15 years old. I think I may have hit the lucky ball, because that thing keeps coming back in perfect health. I would suggest putting her out. I'm very sorry, OP, but just know you made the cat happier in its life.

      • My cat is 19 now. He's got quite a few things wrong with him but none serious enough that he seems to be in considerable pain all the time. I don't think it'll be too long before we have to have him put down though. It sucks because I've had him my whole life but it's better than seeing them suffer.

      • I've had a dog for 11 years. Was the best dog ever. Big, but didn't jump or bite, and was the greatest dog I could ever ask for. Had to put her down because of some problems, and was one of the saddest days of my life :(. It's rough, but try to remember the good times you had, and you will get through it

I'll section this off for all of you who don't wish to view it, but this is bird related.
Every year or so, birds nest in our old unused barbecue grill we leave out for that purpose. The mother lays the eggs, and then doesn't return. We raise them on our own, and they grow and live for a bit. My siblings choose an egg and name the birds, and more or less 'claim them as pets'. We check on them nearly every day, and check their progress. Anyways, we had a few deathly cold nights during a certain week. As it was a grill, whenever a bird fell into a crevice, we'd take them out and return them to the nest. One night, it was worse than ever, and I was barely able to sleep. I woke up, and as usual, they're there. But, two of the three lay limp, and stiff. They had got stuck during the night, and had frozen to death. I gathered my siblings, and comforted them as they cried. We disposed of them properly, and respectfully. The surviving bird lived and prospered, whilst met with these conditions. It flew off after the time was right. Last year: Again, we were met with another flock of three. We had raised them well during their child stages, where they were but skinny pink masses. During a heat wave, an insect epidemic occurred in our state (I live in Utah, reader's pleasure) and we were met with terrifying results. Another fateful school morning, I checked, after wiping the sweat from my brow. They seemed alive, but inasmuch as this seemed, they were literally pulsating. It turns out they succumbed to the heat wave, and a tigerfly had layed it's larvae in the lot of them. Underneath their skin, maggots squirmed and wriggled, making me angey at the sight. This was met with a well-earned middle finger from twelve-year-old me, as well as an ignition sequence. As those little bastards popped under the heat, I smiled, whilst wiping the oncoming waves of tears filling my tender eyes.
Condolences, OP. I wish you the best.

          • I lost my cat named Romeo. Though he wasn't really mine, he lived with my aunt whom I am very close with I would always spend the night on weekends and Romeo always came to greet me. I was the only person who didn't live in the house who he would sleep on. In December he had swallowed some string and a needle, but that was only the beginning. In early Feb after surgery to remove the string he started having trouble going to the bathroom. As it turns out he had a cancerous tumor in his anus. The last time he laid on me I kind of knew I wouldn't have him around much longer. The last thing I told him was "Cya later buddy." He passed in March.

                • Last year my family had to put down one of our cats. She had gotten really thin and wasn't eating. Turns out her liver was failing. Eventually got to the point where she couldn't move, and it was clear that it was time.

                  • Not a cat person, so this doesn't make me sad. Cats want too much from their owners. When we put cats down where I live, we use shotguns.

Sort of, I'll put it in spoiler-text to spare those that may be easily offended or squeamish.
I was about nine or so and I came home from school and noticed that our German Shepherd was coughing up blood. I went to get my dad and we ended up taking him to the neighbors' house (older couple, wife used to be a vet). Turns out, our other neighbor (who was kind of a dick and didn't like our German Shepherd) had fed our dog a piece of meat that had soaked in anti-freeze. The antifreeze had already been the dog's system too long and he was past the point of no return. We didn't live close enough to an animal hospital. I grew up in kind of a rural area. My dad took me inside our neighbors' house and the husband took my dog to the backyard and killed him in the most humane way available, shot him. We never did find enough proof to pin it on the neighbor that did it; we found the remnants of some meat soaked in antifreeze but no way to say that it was him. I did catch his kids shooting their pellet guns at some of our beagles a few years later. Called the cops on them and they got in trouble.
That said, my condolences OP. I know what it's like to lose a pet. Most of mine died due to old age (and went in their sleep) but it's always a hard thing to deal with.

                              • Sorry to hear about that, OP. Yes, I've had to put down a pet. My previous dog was diagnosed with congestive heart failure two summers ago, and we decided to keep her on meds to lengthen her life, if only by a few months. Her death I can easily identify as the worst moment of my life, she could barely move around on her own by the time my mom and sister brought her to the vet. I wasn't even there for when she was put down, and I'll never forgive myself for that. Though, I still love that dog and always appreciate we had time to spend with her.

                                  • My dog got hit by a car one morning. I went downstairs to get breakfast and he limped in, soaking wet, shaking and coughing up blood. Mum took him to the vets and when she came back without him I broke down. My hamster had a heart attack while climbing his ladder. He just kind of froze.

Still sad though, don't get me wrong.
