Dichotomy of how users see Bungie.next

In some of my lurking moments on Bungie.net, I have noticed a fairly prominent split in how people see Bungie.next and Bungie.old. Brand new users, those who have joined since the Destiny reveal trailer, or even since E3 seem to view Bungie.next as just another normal website with a cool community. Even more so, they see anyone who has been here for a while (say, '10) as crotchety old timers overwhelmed with nostalgia for the "good ol' days." On the other hand, those same old users (never thought I'd call a '10 old...) lament the loss of what they believe made Bungie.old their home on the Internet. I confess that I am a member of that group, but that's neither here nor there. Somehow, we cannot get the point across to the newer users that Bungie.old was gloriously different from other places, but now I am digressing into rambling nostalgia. So for newer users, I am curious. How do you see Bungie.next? For older users, are you happy here? Or do you find yourself drifting away, as though the tether has been cut? For really old users ('04 and before) did you notice a similar split in thinking during the arrival of the New Hawtness?

  • it's not where you are my dear friend but who you're with that counts this place could be the most broken, unappealing, non functional place on the internet and none of that would matter for as long as Bungie is running it and (the true) community is chasing it ;) i'll be here, even when you think i'm not to me... Bungie.old (as you put it) just put on a new T-shirt, you know because they grew and the old one didn't fit anymore and apparently i'm not even seeing it in it's full glory... soon it will turn to me/us and go "check out my logo... here and here... and here and... if you're nice i'll let you see that one there ;) ye that's what i think

  • You talk about the inability to instill the nostalgia of communities past.... Wasted effort. That was then, this is now. It is up to this community and Bungie to foster something even greater. So far (according to you) - failing. Your complaint is analogous to the old guy that likes to talk about how "America Used To Be". The only one irritated is him. Why? Because he either failed to grasp the new... Or he failed to find somewhere else to satisfy his nostalgia. Finally - it's your responsibility to find your satisfaction... Not the community's responsibility to satisfy you. Just being honest

    • The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be. - Marcel Pagnol But really, Bungie.next is terrible.

      • I liked the old system better. While I think muting people is a great addition, I do not like that it is the primary form of moderation. This way allows users to act like fools and simply be silenced by particular individuals; this seems good at first, but if the feature is used often, it will narrow the amount of posts seen on the forum for an individual who pnly wants to see thought-provoking content. On the other hand, the old moderation system instilled a sense of "fear," and forced members of the forums to post quality threads and comment responsibly. This resulted in there being an abundance of decent content because most members would rather have the privilege to post than be banned.

As what you would classify as an old member ('08) I would say I have been drifting away from this site. I don't know what caused it. It could have been the redesign into a twitter-like website, the new members, or the fact I just don't see the old members as much as I used to. All I know is that it doesn't feel "right", it's as if I don't belong to this community anymore. Idk it's probably just me.

            • Been with B.net since '07 officially but been visiting since Halo 2. Not sure where that puts me but to say that there has been a shift since the Destiny reveal trailer would be an understatement. To be honest I even feel that Bungie themselves have changed. Not in a bad way per say but not for the better either. I know that with a growing community there comes a sense of loss of individual importance but I feel like Bungie has pulled back a bit and put up a more general facade that melds well in order to make the necessary good first impression on all the new folks around here. Then again it could just be us. And on a totally unrelated note: does anyone else feel put aside by Bungie as an Xbox user? I mean I know its just business and Destiny is coming to Xbox 1 and 360 but I feel like Bungie is a former best friend you wave to and they pretend that they didn't see you lol

            • Sure I am new since '12, but have been a fan of halo since combat evolved, and now I was finally able to join the B.net. And I love the community. Be Brave. ;)

            • I still consider myself new to the site, I've only been here a couple years now. Still, I really like the new site. I like the old aesthetics, but I welcome the new. Plus, the site's more accessible and that's a relief for me. I haven't had consistent computer access for a year or two now, and being able to use the site from multiple devices is a huge plus. All in all, in really happy with B.net and I'm looking forward to spending a lot more time on here! =^.^=

            • Yes. You've nailed it, I really loved not only the way this place used to look like but I preferred the way the posts were organized and how The Flood was teeming with life literally almost all the time. Now this place feels odd and much more empty. As for even older website changes, the only thing that really stuck out to me was when Bungie changed the top bar or something. The format bugged me mainly because I was in a habit of doing things one way and they changed the link locations. Also, we have a preview button now and the width was extended. I CAN NOW USE THIS SITE, YAY.

            • The new forums seem to draw quite a bit of inspiration from the comments section on a Reddit post. The only thing missing is a more transparent system to see how “popular” and “trending” are being sorted without introducing a karma system. Other than that it’s a nice change that’s taking a bit of getting used to but I really enjoy it.

              • Layout itself is fine (In fact, I like it a lot), I'm just not huge on the color scheme. If the last background from Bungie.Old replaced the current blue one, I'd be fine. The dark theme is also ugly, if you ask me. It's missing a bunch of tiny details the light theme incorporates that make it more likable, in my opinion.

B.next's features are largely welcomed and have improved browsing to the point where other forums are a nuisance. However, the layout and theme design leave much to be desired. Discussion seems sectioned off into "comment strains" and it feels like it's designed to be more like a social network. This benefits people who post often, but lurkers and people trying to follow discussion have a hard time mainly because of post order. The look of the old site with these features would be perfect I think. Also, the drop in discussion quality has grown stale. The community's only as good as you make it.

B.Old i will miss greatly but know that all it takes is one person to make that postive experience that makes you come back for more. Bungie makes me feel like they are a Rock band and i can nerd out with all the other fans.

                    • What I find weird is how bungie have gone to great lengths to remove any memory of their past efforts. Ok, I can understand the whole Crimson project - being a bit of a failure - but Halo and beyond? Be interesting to see if Destiny is given more of an actual forum focus, or if its discussions will bleed into the pale beige that bungie.next became.

                      • I miss Bungie.old, I loved it. (I was there since late '09, but didn't make an account until early 2010.) I'm starting to really like Bungie.next now. It feels like I'm an elder (not really) to all these new users. It makes me feel like I am actually looked up to by some users.

                        • Being an Old Skool member of Bungie since '05 I've seen a lot of changes here on B.net, both cosmetic and community. Every time something does change I get that "aww man" feeling why they go and do that, or why did this happen it was perfect just the way it was. However like most people, I learn to adapt and the more I come here and embrace the change and the quicker I become use to it and start liking it. Yeah the community back in the pre release days Halo 2 and 3 seemed more of a tight knit feeling, but that's just my nostalgic feeling and opinion, I was new then, younger and everything seemed sooo much better at that time. To answer your question OP, yes I feel happy here. Bungie is still Bungie, a company that makes great games, with a great ever expanding community and I plan on being here for another 10 years!!
