My roommate was a pot dealer this past year. After seeing the purely psychological effects of having marijuana around, I'd personally never want to see it legalized. The lackadaisical nature it brought about, the lying, cheating, and stealing necessary to fund it (he stole almost $5,000 from his mom in a single month so he could smoke 2-3 times a day 7 days a week with his fellow dealers/smokers), and, put bluntly, the fact that he smoked because he had crippling depression he had left untreated following his parents divorce, was enough to let me know that smoking pot, in some cases (I won't negate the medical benefits it can have in patients who need it purely for medicinal purposes), smoking pot is just a way to escape and cover up deep-seated psychological issues, such as depression, anxiety, or adhd (all of which were exhibited by my roommate and his fellow smokers, both physically and verbally expressed directly to me).

  • You are confusing an individuals personal problems with side effects of marijuana. Correlation not causation. He obviously has other issues and used marijuana as a crutch. What you need to understand is the difference between a mental crutch or addiction and a physical one. Mentally anything can be addicted to or be used as a crutch for ones personal problems. The object/action itself may not cause such behaviors but it is attached to these things by the specific people that us them and the object/action itself is not attaching these behaviors to people. A physical addiction is something that causes physical withdrawals and the object or action is the cause of such affects. What you are describing of your friend fits snuggly into mental addiction. He was simply using marijuana as a crutch to escape his problems however his behavior was not caused by the marijuana itself. He could have just as easily hidden under other addictions like videos games or sex.

  • Why shouldn't it be legalized? If it was your roommate wouldn't be a dealer. Psychological effects are not the fault of cannabis, but the individual user. The lying and cheating is because...IT'S ILLEGAL! Wow, you just described the guy has huge problems, which confirms my point that it was HIS fault, not cannabis, and could have easily happened over alcohol, gambling or many other things. Cannabis can also help treat anxiety and depression, but there's nothing wrong with using it recreationally.
