This is starting to drive me slightly crazy... Can it be said that hint 4 is actually 2 hints in one? Red only / goes as fast as you do. Red characters follow me, and I am the password? Am I on the right track with this at all? I don't think I'm giving much away if I am because I've tried everything I can think of along these lines.

Break it down into simplicity at its finest. You're absolutely right in the fact that it applies to you yourself, but you are not the password. Think of it in terms of letters, or one letter in particular.
