I always thought the traveler was just a big machine that emitted a special kind of energy. It's not like magic magic it only appears to be.

How do you explain emitting "energy" that allows people to magically augment their guns on the fly without touching them so that they shoot bullets that make a person catch on fire? Sure, superheroes have origin stories that sometimes pretend to be based on science but, in the end, it's all basically "magic".

Think of it like a giant green lantern that guardians go back to and recharge themselves.

Right but the powers they have can't be explained scientifically unless you use some sort of technobabble mumbo jumbo and in that case I'd rather it just be magic at that point.

I don't think they'd have called it 'space magic' if it wasn't any different than regular magic, but I guess that's just my opinion.

Well it's space magic because it came from a space thing and is in a Science Fantasy game.

Green lanterns still basically use space magic, so. . . Unless of course you'd like to try to use science to explain the bullshit they pull off with those rings.
