If the US had a Technocratic Party would you consider voting for it?

Yes.

No.

Definition. I think I would. Obviously you have the mostly negative example of China, but I don't think most of those issues actually derive from Technocracy. And honestly, we already have/are fast approaching many of China's issues with our current system. I just have this odd feeling that it would be better than letting cowboys and banksters run everything.

  • At the very least a stronger shift should be made towards Technocracy. As it stands the uninformed public are making the shots and they aren't doing too well. They've elected in people not looking out for the best interests of the people or the state but people looking to be career politicians who lie, cheat, steal whenever possible. Our nation has a bunch of problems yet our Congress is hopelessly gridlocked because that's how the politicians get re-elected: If you don't vote for Romney, Obama is gonna turn America into a 3rd world country. Businesses buy public votes with massive spending campaigns to drown out alternative messages, no matter how true.

  • So what about social problems? The last time "experts" tried to fix something towards the nature of social problems they outlawed alcohol. And look where that got us. -___-

      • Hmm, their ideals remind me of the more archaic aspects of "scientific management", which was breaking production down into manageable tasks, and treating everything, including workers, as an input to be manipulated. It worked but had a limit. Push too hard and job satisfaction would plummet, along with productivity. The technocrat's view of everything as a technical problem with a technical solution is along the same thought path. That might work in a country of robots, but people have radically different needs, wants, and opinions on how things should be done. And government is about people more than anything. Not that I'm opposed to having engineers and whatnot in the government, they're educated people with a valuable set of skills. I just don't like the end ideal of technocracy.

        • I would love to vote for an engineer or scientist for a meaningful office, so far have never had the chance. I like the way they approach problems. I can't help but think they would be better than lawyers, MBAs, and actors that dominate higher offices.

          • I'm not too sure, but it does seem that science and technology are ruined by politicians who try to bend or reject them to fit their agendas or don't know anything about them at all.

          • On one hand, problem-solving and discourse are the fundamentals of engineering and other technical professions. On the other, they likely aren't very familiar with their laws or Constitutional study, so it seems a bit dumb to elect them.

Depends on what their policies are. You can't defer to a technocracy on every issue: you have to say what the goals are for an expert to tell you the best ways to reach them. Further, there are plenty of issues that the relevant community of experts haven't reached a consensus on.

            • I don't know enough about the technocrats, to be honest. However, from my understanding, technocracy for China has resulted in massive economic modernization.

            • It could cause the problem that not everyone could stand for election for the party - given the entrance requirements. However, it would greatly reduce the problem in politics that almost no politicians have any great depth of knowledge in the department to which they have been assigned, leading to the situation where the Governmental official on a subject is as clueless as the average voter. Also, I can't hear the word "Technocracy" without thinking of the Brotherhood of Steel...

            • By technocratic logic, the best people to create laws and regulate large Wall Street corporations are bankers themselves, as they have the most knowlege of the systems and how they work. Now I might agree with that, but I have a feeling you might not.
