How Should Player Attrubutes Translate Within Destiny?

As I was reading SecondestClass's post on stealth, I began to wonder exactly how each players' attributes will translate across the different game modes in Destiny? From what has been revealed, I am operating under the assumption that Faction Wars will be Destiny's multiplayer mode. So, if you are a Hunter with lvl 50 attributes, a Supercloak of Invisibility and a particle beam sniper rifle call Piercing Shadow that can shoot through a wall, will the same attributes, skills, weapons, and armor you have in co-op missions directly translate into Destiny's multiplayer? If so, this will allow players to truly have the freedom to create their own unique approach to PvP combat. However, I know in discussing the topic of unique objects, such as weapons, armor, etc., that some players dislike the idea of disparity this kind of system could potentially create. So, here are my questions: 1) In the interest of uniqueness and creativity, should Bungie allow players attributes, armor, weapons to directly translate from co-op or story mode into multiplayer? 2) Or, in the interest of fairness and balance, should they limit these things in multiplayer? 3) Or perhaps is there the a way to reasonably insure through matchmaking a balanced gameplay without limiting a player's attributes, skills, weapons, armor?

  • Quite an intriguing thought. I can see the positives of both sides and honestly can decide which I prefer. Hey, why not both? One set of matchmaking with conventional balanced format. A second set with "who's built the best character/clan?" sort of deal.

I actually made a thread about my ideas on competitive multiplayer a while back, instead of me posting a huge wall of text heres the link with all of my ideas. Warning, it's a long read. http://www.bungie.net/7_Things-I-would-like-to-see-and-things-I-don39t/en-us/Forum/Post?id=60044720&path=1

Great ideas everyone! Thanks for sharing. After further reflection, here's one idea I think could work. As part of the Destiny's narrative, make Faction Wars a friendly but competitive arena pitting members of the Destiny communinty against each other. For me the narrative is important because it gives justification for limiting certain attributes. Hit points should be uniform, amongst the classes at least. Armor and weapons will have trade offs such agility, recharge rate, damage, rate of fire, etc. But each item will have a budget with specific categories. So you might have two sniper rifles, one is more powerful but has less ammo in the clip or a longer recharge rate, but you'll never be stuck against someone who has a weapon that fires faster, has more ammo, and does more damage. The only problem I see with this is it creating a disparity between what's a good weapon in co-op may not be as effective in multiplayer because it's not a direct translation, but it still allows creativity without being unfair. What do think? Too complicated?

        • I don't think Multiplayer will be separate from the story at all. Players will go about beating the game in an environment where other players can join and leave at any time. How much customization will be available, and how much impact levels will have, if any, is debatable. I can't imagine you'll be forced to use a stock character for pvp if you can play the game with a customized character though.

        • With how much Bungie is focusing on getting you to be your own character, i can hardly assume that your multiplayer character will not be your actual character....You'll be taking your own character in for sure, now they might give you load out weapons, or they might just say, -blam!- it, go in with everything and if you die because your level is low then level up noob! (thats the classic mmorpg approach...) However i don't see this happening because Bungie has always been about starting players off on an even footing and letting player skill be the deciding factor... The difficulty here is that that's easy when everyone is Master Chief, but Destiny has different classes which makes things a little more difficult.... I believe that each player will be given a battle proficiency rating bases on their level, attributes, perks, gear, powers, and so forth so that each player is given a number, and then it'll add those numbers together to create a battle proficiency rating for the team, and then match that team up with another team of the closest rating...

Some of EA's NCAA football games had a cool feature that allowed you to play with "even teams," despite whatever the stats may be. So if you're favorite team was a powerhouse, and my favorite was an awful football school, we could still use them the game would balance out the stats so that the game would emphasize player skill. Is something like this possible? It doesn't have to be a mandatory thing, but if you could "even the players" it would allow you to play with players of all levels and everybody could still have a good time. It woudl also be a way of keeping equipment that is great in a PvE setting from making PvP totally one-sided.

            • I'd think it would be cool to keep custom character looks from the story/normal game and be able to use them in multplayer, but without stat modifiers. That could ruin a smaller multiplayer death match mode. Imagine being steamrolled by some Titan with ridiculously better gear than yours. I was never a fan of that in any game. As a thought(and like what kjo said), this would kind of take away from the uniqueness of your own gear, multiplayer PvP mode could adjust the stats of the different weapon types to similar stats. Let's say some guy has this way cool looking sniper. And then lets say there is another guy who also has a fancy looking sniper. Lets say it's a 1v1 and it's kind of one-sided to the first guy due to the fact that his weapon hits harder. How does one balance said matchup without taking away both players sexy, sexy rifles? Give em the same stats like you probably already guessed. From the same damage to magazine size to reload speed. I would think armor would turn into just a cosmetic thing (keeping hitboxes the same too). And then attributes and abilities might be standardized across the different classes. Still waiting for E3 and hopefully more info on this glorious-looking game so hopefully we shall get something out of it.
