I thought Ammonium nitrate by it's self is inert, right? It takes an oxidizer to become an active explosive. Depending on what you mix it with you get different types of explosive. Amomonium Nitrate mixed with aluminum powder gets you an explosive that reacts with impact, AKA Tannerite. Mixxing it with Diesel fuel gets you ANFO which is a high explosive. Does anyone know the chemistry of Ammonium nitrate exploding in a fire? I always thought it had to be mixed to be explosive.

  • Maybe it was stored in aluminum containers? There is still some residue left when they make the containers, after all. From what I remember in Chemistry (And there is a reason why I'm not majoring in chemistry, I have a good chance in minoring in it though), the three components to fire is oxygen, heat and fuel. The fuel could be the Ammonium nitrate (If stored in aluminum containers, that might be a big reason), the oxygen could be the air around and the heat, from the weather. However, the heat is definitely not strong enough to cause a big fire like in the video. Maybe someone lit a match or something, you know, smoking break. Too many vague factors, still a big tragedy.

  • MIX EVERYTHING WITH THERMITE

  • Thermite actually burns very slowly when put in a regular fire. It takes a high temperature igniter to start the reaction, and even then it just burns. It's not explosive.

  • Unless you add ice.
