This just doesn't add up. What on earth gave them the impression that Call of Duty is a puzzle game? Do they consider "mistake=instadeath" difficulty a puzzle? (I'm not talking about just the difficulty level but the map too, FYI.)

The document isn't loading on my computer so I can't read its entirety, but I agree: game's like Call of Duty are puzzles. Figuring out what to do and how to win in the campaign is pretty simple for us more advanced users, but no doubt younger, less experienced audiences find it quite a challenge. We tend to lean more towards the multiplayer, because it offers more complex, deeper puzzles: puzzles created by people. I haven't played Call of Duty in a long time, but if I remember correctly, in a game mode like team-deathmatch you have two teams of say 5 or 6 players. The puzzle you need to solve is presented by the opposition - every action they perform requires a counter action by you and your teammates. You need to figure out what they're doing, what they're trying to achieve, and combat it so you're the victor not them. It's a puzzle. The degree of difficulty depends entirely on the puzzle-makers you face - the skill of the opposition.

Isn't the advent of mainstream gaming great? Sure the negative stigma that was associated with it has mostly disappeared, but now we get to deal with games being developed primarily for the lowest common denominator. Consoles will suffer from this more than the PC unfortunately due to the lack of an entry barrier.
