How to keep your character unique

Every player of every MMO Developed would swear that each character is unique. but honestly they're just all vanilla looking characters with the same story and the only difference is there classes -_- I think for this game to truly make it's characters unique it's gonna have to give them something new that hasn't been introduced to RPG's yet. Does anyone have a thought or opinion on this :x In the pic above i see three characters but I also three story's, it makes me think of all the possibilities for character development in this game and it gets me curious :) What do you guys think should happen so that our characters can really be unique?

I'd like to see permadeath become an option. a lv. 86 Hunter thats never died in PvE would be a unique character. Players would look at that hero and say "Thats one bad ass dude, to have gone out in the wild and come back alive"

    • This is optional When u create your 3 guardians You should be able to create a story for how they become allies wheather by a survey or one that you create If it is a survey there should be like hand drawn art, doesnt have to be too fancy but just a visual to entertain you :-) You should also be able to name you guardians And you can make them the rest of your fireteam when u r playing alone

In all honesty, if I decide to be a human over an exo, I might try to make it look like me as much as possible. Partly just to see if I can, partly because I want to see me fighting aliens.

      • Don't forget about armor shaders. They change the color of your gear.

There's only so many aesthetic permutations, and if the ones people choose are constrained somewhat by how these affect combat roles and proficiency, then some are less likely (sticking with a certain gun/armor/spaceship even though it's weak for example). So those are limiting factors on uniqueness of player character appearance. However, there might be some feature to make a more unique backstory for your Guardian. Even simply as a kind of character bio type thing that doesn't weigh in on gameplay (but could be secondary to things that do such as physiology / character class). That opens up more avenues for storytelling and role-playing, if only from a strictly imaginative direction. Then again, supposing, say you can choose your character's place of origin in the city and backstory, that could also affect how NPC's respond to you when you visit your character's "hometown" so to speak. Faction affiliations could tie into this as well.

This concept can take you many places but the one thing to remember is to keep it open to EVERYONE and to keep it aesthetic, after all it's about making your character your own. Not making him the ultimate godly destroyer of worlds -_-

            Even with this being said
Tying aesthetics to stats is the absolute death of creativity
all that's being said here is that having some small differences to make you character feel over all something YOU created is simpler than it sounds and is completely possible.

There can be something like how in dragon age if you where to get a factions or cities approval you were able to get there insignia or logo painted on your gear. it wasn't much of a difference but it showed of you achievements in a way where it wouldn't affect stats but showed off your experiences.

I think you're on to something with the stories, but there needs to be a unifying feature of the game that can make your story unique. A divisive social issue would suffice; something that you can identify with or against. Like abortion or gay marriage. I'm not trolling. There needs to be some sort of cause that players can rally themselves around, or rally against, but that doesn't break the core gameplay; something meaningless from a gameplay standpoint that is the monolithic storytelling slingshot.

              • I'd say at the end if you want unique looks the most important thing is to make sure there's a large variety of options and that appearance isn't tied to stats. Tying aesthetics to stats is the absolute death of creativity because we all want the best stuff, but if you disconnect stats and looks and give me enough aesthetic options, then uniqueness is fairly easy.

              • Bungie should design a state of the art amoury/forge for modifying our armour and weapons for aesthetic purposes only. To alter your armour you may need materials from different location's within the game, e.g, certain elements/compounds can only acquired from Saturn. This would be the catalyst for a commuity driven currency system and increase the connection between players, their characters and the universe.

Well to implement some kind of cause or rally for the player to follow without affecting the game play maybe all it does is give you a unique camo for your ship or a cool ability. just something so small that all anyone will notice is your characters preference in an argument?

                • Simply play the least attractive character available. It's like playing a female dwarf in WoW, nobody wants to look at that.

But how would they achieve that in a new way different than other RPG's have done -_-

                  • Interesting thread. Something Goat said below intrigued me.
Bungie isn't telling us that Titans attacked this base on this day; we're the ones writing that piece of the story
If the story really does change based on who, when, and how we complete certain actions... well, that could be an absolutely amazing thing. We know gear has rarity levels, and hopefully Bungie won't make many, if any at all, competitive MM based. So there's a chance for you to be unique. The idea of completing certain objectives instead of others appeals to me as well. I really like how in WoW they have 'outside instances' based on if you have completed a certain quest or not. An entire area could completely change based on if you did a certain quest or not. It's fascinating. Hopefully our worlds will actually change based on our actions... and hopefully the gear won't be like WoW where an item only has a .03% drop rate and only one person in the 40 man raid can get the damned thing... it is the most frustrating thing... ugh. I like how 'Defiance' did it- where if something is lucky enough to drop, everybody in the party gets the thing.

                      • Well the picture above really shows classes. They all look like Humans to me, but it's not exactly easy to tell. I think what will make each character unique - in addition to their race-specific back stories, is how we complete the missions in the game, who we fight alongside and against, and what choices we make. Unlike other RPGs or just games in general, Destiny seems to be a game where we're creating the Campaign storyline ourselves. We have the backstory and all, but we're the writers and we're the ones playing the part. Bungie isn't telling us that Titans attacked this base on this day; we're the ones writing that piece of the story, and that's what intrigues me most about this game.
