Is there a "correct" way?
As a matter of fact there is.
Two spaces after a sentence is a holdover from the days of monospaced fonts used on typewriters. With the introduction of proportional fonts used in word processors, web pages, and everywhere else now, two spaces after a sentence is now arcane. No typing or English teacher should ever be requiring two spaces after a period.
If they do, feel free to refer them to the Chicago Manual of Style, where it is NOT recommended except for monospaced fonts (which nobody uses anymore). See Sec. 2.9: "Like most publishers, Chicago advises leaving a single character space, not two spaces, between sentences and after colons used within a sentence, and this recommendation applies both to manuscripts and published works."

Chicago is the most manually stylish of all places.
If they do, feel free to refer them to the Chicago Manual of Style,
Partially for me, I was also reminded of this mainly because the Chicago Manual of Style is what I used during college to draft in MLA format but was still not considered "published works" in that I was merely writing for an assignment. Thanks for the textbook definition, I need to touch up on a few of these rules again.
