So how does one get banned?

I've been seeing many mods say that they can't ban anymore. I'm a little confused as to how someone gets banned now. Is is a report based system or what? Would a mod or two be kind enough to shed some life on this subject.

 •
Yes, that is the DC Universe "Phantom Zone". I think that it is a good metaphor for the tools.
Report, Hide and Mute are your incredibly powerful tools. Hide should show below each and every post/comment/reply and as a "red minus sign" on the far bottom right of each topic when you are viewing the threads or a filter of the threads in the forums. There are two levels of Hide. Personal and "OMG someone light the Bat-Signal!" First off, personal. Otherwise known as "Meh". If you allow this "reason" to stay (you don't really have to select it) you are in essence saying "I just don't want to see this post ever again." If you do it to an OP or while in the Forum listing of topics, you are hiding the entire thread, all posts, all content within, all replies and comments. This Hide is from your view. Other people will still see the post(s) that you've hidden (unless they hide them as well) and the people who you have hidden will have no idea that you have chosen to hide their post or thread. Now, for the Report function and the "Bat-Signal" reasons. In the pull-down, when you go to Report content, there are currently 6 (other than "Meh") reasons and types of behavior that our hosts really don't think have a place here. The descriptions are not precise, and it is known and understood that your personal definition of "Offensive Content" may not precisely align with another member's definition of "Offensive Content". Don't let that intimidate, worry or give you pause. If YOU think that it is hide-worthy AND meets any of the specific reasons... by all means, pick it. Not only will your Hide then remove the content from your sight and experience, but that report will then merge with others and eventually a review and judgement of the offending post/content/thread will be seen and dealt with by the powers that be. (sort of like the previous report system, but with better details and more computerized and technical algorithms and... stuff. Sorry, that one sort of got away from me there). But don't overlook the power, yes the POWER of your "Meh". You did notice that it has a field for your personal comments, didn't you? Well, I don't know about you, but what I know about programmers tells me that if they are collecting data, they intend the use that data in one way or another, sooner or later. They just HATE the idea of bits and bytes going off to die alone in some dark corner of the database.... anyway. I would (at least based on what I know now which is precisely what you know, and that is scant little, but!) try using that field. If someone is being a douche, then put that in. If they are being sexist (but not breaking rules, just your own personal "do not cross line") then Hide 'em and put down why. Even those personal hide and reasons can and may have some value to someone other than the individual user. Oh, I almost forgot! Mute. Well. Mute is just like "Hide" except that you're banishing a whole person, or at least their user account, to your personal "Phantom Zone". The report reasons work EXACTLY the same as the Hide and to "mute a fool", you click on their avatar or membername, and select "Mute" from the popup card. Once again, "Meh" mutes them from your view and experience, selecting a reason from the pulldown does all of that and adds your report to our queue. Well, long read, I know. But if you are having issues or are unclear as to "what to do" when you see something that you just know "shouldn't be here", well you have incredible tools to make not only YOUR experience here better, but to help make everyone's experience better. I hope that you find the tools easy to use and effective. I have already personally seen a lot of "noise" and other content (okay, it wasn't noise, it was crap) that didn't last long when everyone decided that they didn't want to see that sort of thing in their face, and it was taken from the view of others pretty damned fast too! So, you have a say, you have the ability, you are not alone, but you can decide for yourself what is good, bad or ugly and what you are willing to accept and what you will not. Don't let the power go to your head!
