I'd really be interested to know if psychology has managed to capture this phenomenon, where people insult the validity of the opposing camp to try to cast future rebuttals in a negative light, while the initiator assumes a 'superior' or 'more objective' stance simply by shooting first. It reminds me a bit of witch hunts.
