Dictionary says Vanguard is...
1. A group of people leading the way in new developments or ideas.
2. A position at the forefront of new developments or ideas: "in the vanguard of technical development".
So possibly instead of being a leader in battle, it could be a leader in technology? Maybe a tech class eh?

Also, militarily a Vanguard is the lead of an advancing formation. The tip of the spear, so to speak. Hylebos has some really interesting stuff here; I just assumed that a Vanguard would be a specialization of a Titan or Hunter made through a skill tree of leveling system that would be a fast, damage dealing, med-to-low health character. A shock trooper, basically.

Actually a lot of this was out of date, I quickly edited things so that they made more sense.
