How would one go about writing a story for a video game?

Edited by Circadian Wolf: 3/21/2013 12:50:58 PMA story is a story, the only difference with a video game is that there needs to be gaps in that story to fit in the gameplay. But some of these guys are right, you don't start a game with it's story. You need gameplay mechanics, just copy-pasting a game like CoD and slapping on a new story isn't going to cut it.

With a dragon's claw dipped in the blood of a thousand dead stars, silly.
-
With a crayon.
-
Same way you write any story.

Aliens.

Edited by Funkbrotha10: 3/19/2013 10:59:27 PMThere is no such thing as a "video game story" a story is a story. You can't make a game by writing a story. If you are a new developer and you start by coming up with a story you are doing it wrong and your idea will never get off of the ground. Games start with game play.

Any decent story starts with "It was a dark and stormy night".
-
Gameplay first
-
Make a world. Make a main character. Make an enemy. Craft story using the 3 previously mentioned things.
-
Dialog, actions, and events.
-
Pretty much this

Alright serious answer it is then. I'm no professional in the field since I don't make and or help create games (yet). I would start it out like you would start any other story, you look for inspirational things in life that interest you, whether that be religion, nature, war, etc. and make metaphorical story lines with common morals. You could also start with what the storie's universeor what it's centered around and then begin introducing characters that have big roles and small roles alike but all of them play some part in the moving of the plot/story have an antagonist and a protagonist there must be some sort of conflict in the story otherwise people will immediately lose interest......and beyond that your on your own I would also suggest looking at popular literature like (The Lord of The Rings, Enders Game, etc.) look at examples and see how they develop there stories I hope this helped good luck.

Just start writing stories. If you don't have the programming skills to make a game around your story, turn the game into an Interactive Fiction Game. Inform7 is a great tool to use for this, though it can take a while to learn to do interesting things.
