Man vs. Nature - Destiny

Well, I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but here goes: During my time here at Bungie.net, I've heard words tossed around. Certain ones, namely : reactive, breathing, alive, and changing; all of these words pertaining to one thing: Destiny. In order to truly make a game that is a living and changing environment, wouldn't it make sense to include a weather system? For example: You are on a rainy slope, you obviously do not have as much traction or control as you'd like. What if your character reacted to the rain? I mean, maybe an occasional slip? If you can climb or something in Destiny, what if you just slip more often depending upon weather conditions? This is all purely conjecture, mind you. Can you see environments being created and destroyed? For example, a tornado rolls by a small village. The village is devastated and needs rehabilitation. Things like that, that's what I'm talking about! Bottom line: Do you think that we will see changes in weather (i.e. Tornados, Thunderstorms, Wildfires), and their effect on the world around them? What do you guys think?

  • I'd like to see the environment/weather truly have an impact or story and game play. I think after being abandoned for so long, Earth would have seen some major catastrophic events. These events could have resulted in things like the sea levels raising, putting many cities underwater, certain regions being launched into their own ice ages, while other places could have absolutely no Ozone above them, creating a different type of danger. I'd like to see certain places where it gets so cold you have to find places to take shelter from the cold and warm up, while others could have UV rays so hot shining between clouds of ash that it can burn anyone the light touches. Other places could be plagued by severe thunderstorms, random bouts of Acid Rain and some places could be unsafe due to giant hail and razor sharp ice crystals falling from the sky. Just types of environments that sometimes force you to think about how you're going to get from Point A to Point B.

  • I was thinking about them adding some Minecraft/survival aspects. Seeing how popular and fun it is, it would make perfect sense. Hmmm...

  • Imagine your friend is telling you about the time he and his friends had a massive firefight against some Fallen outside of a cave the fallen have taken over. He tells you that there was a lot of guys there but it was pretty cool. Then you and your friends go to that same place but it is dumping rain and incredibly windy. You have to lob grenades using the wind to try to get them to land accurately. You can barely even see the enemy, and they can barely see you! If bungie is trying to make each player craft their own story then having weather affect gameplay would be huge

  • The best way to go about this would be to classify weather into two categories. First, weather that affects vision of the environment, but does not affect player movement or the environment itself. Second, weather that will change the environment, including how players are affected. This would entail player movement, how grenades fly through the air, and factors that do not directly affect the player. For the first category. Weather which has no effect on its surroundings is common to many video games. This has been around for a long time and any game that doesn't include it, probably isn't that good. While this is more basic there are many varying degrees of quality presentation. If there is a white out snow storm and I am struggling to see other players, NPCs, wild animals, and the terrain. Shouldn't be too restrictive, but done in a visually appealing and dynamic capacity, white outs would be pretty rad. The possibilities addressed by having weather actually constrict the players abilities and actually damage the surroundings is much less common, the second category. I would be supremely impressed if Bungie made a significant attempt to severely break the boundaries of this kind of weather. There are a great number of applications that could be generated by approaching weather with this approach. So when snow is falling you see it accumulate over time, every snowflake doesn't stick but after awhile it starts to build up in surfaces which are uncovered. When rain falls there is more likelihood that players could slip, and lower parts of the terrain might become submerged by rainwater. If there is a lightning storm, branches of trees are split off and thrown to the ground. Higher on mountains, if snow has been accumulated explosions could create avalanches. In a sandstorm while struggling to see through the sand flying past your face, you toss a grenade and it is swept away in the same direction as the wind. The second classification of weather would be much more difficult, but would present numerous opportunities to a company which is attempting to recreate the different planets in our solar system. Personally, I would love for weather that is capable to impact the environment to become prominent.

    • That would be so awesome!!! If we don't have tornadoes romping around killing people hopefully we'll at least have rain, snow, etc. Maybe even cloud movement? :D That would be amazing...^o^ (Heck Minecraft did it, haha!)

    • I Could see this happening. Maybe an island or piece of land is unreachable due to deep water, then days later its frozen over, then days later its melted back to water, it would allow a certain timed aspect to reaching new areas. We may even see a volcano erupt, I can Imagine that destruction on a city or town since the Concept Art has shown pics of Lava flowing

    • I don't think we'd see huge weather influences on the game. Maybe a sandstorm cloding your vision on Mars. Rain or snow on Earth, a fog on Venus, tides maybe? Nothing too extreme. But then again, there is always the chance for dynamic scripted limited in time type of events. Like, if Bungie wanted something to happen on a certain planet at a certain time, say, for instance, they wanted to flood a part of earth. They could do that, and leave it like that for a week or so. But tornadoes, volcanoes etc. destroying places, I don't think so.

      • I'm assuming we'll see weather changes ingame, however the extent of those changes at this point are entirely left to our imagination. With the game being made with new technology for new technology, we could see an onslought of fresh, immersive environment aesthetics.

      • I liked how in ACIII the snow slowed you down and you had to find alternate methods of travel to get to your goal in a timely manner. I would enjoy seeing things like this (especially things to do with the rain such as camouflage, muffled sounds, poor traction, and even acidic affects from past events) implemented into the game.

      • If there are going to be wildfires, I'm going to be the A-hole that will start some. Just to see the world burn.
