Whoever makes this statement is an idiot
Why? Well educate yourself on all of the technolgies that we use that have originated from space exploration and NASA.
You see, there's alot of it. Hell you could just google it and you'll find alot of things.
This is why NASA should be funded, because not only do we explore space and other planets, because the technologies also benefit the general society.
-
NASA funding will be reduced as we move into private funded space exploration. Its only logical that the biggest technological and money based hurdles would be fueled by private sector needs, we need a reason to explore and set bases up, not just to do it.

Edited by Circadian Wolf: 3/4/2013 4:25:31 PMI agree that we need to expand into space at some point, but everyone in this thread is talking like the earth is already doomed and we should abandon all attempts to save it. No i'm not talking about the sun expanding in a few billion years, I'm talking about pollution, deforestation, non-natural climate change ect. It'd be nice for the earth to be more than a smouldering wreck by the time we leave it for other planets.
This is why NASA should be funded, because not only do we explore space and other planets, because the technologies also benefit the general society.
yeah, NASA should be funded. But not when we need money for other More important programs. I love astronomy as much as the next guy but you need to realize that "exploring" space isnt more important than life here on earth...

There's nothing out there.
-
No. Funding NASA for the purpose of creating spin-off technology is stupid as hell. Just funding the research into these kinds of technologies alone would be much cheaper.
-
To be fair, a lot of the space industry is being privatised. That being said, the state should still do more. I genuinely have no idea why Britain doesn't have its own space programme, considering even NASA has mostly British engineers.

NO FATMAN THE GREATEST INVESTMENT ANY COUNTRY COULD MAKE FOR THE COLLECTIVE GOOD OF OUR SPECIES IS NOT WHAT'S IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW
-
Our planet is a sinking ship. We've still got quite some time before we reach the waterline, but it is inevitable.
-
It's important as shit if you want the human race to continue existing. Exploration at the moment is a valuable thing, it's a good galvanization tool. But you can't focus all your attention on exploring the cosmos, because we also have problems here on Earth. It needs to be balanced with other things.

Instead of pouring so much money into social spending, we should use that money to pay back our debt. After the debt has been eliminated, we should make sure we have enough surplus money to maintain a yearly surplus, a total surplus, and finally enough money to fund projects like NASA. Once we have the money to spend, we should really look into terraforming Mars. The process would be expensive and arduous, but it would ultimately give us a brand new planet.

Who the hell said that?
-
I wouldn't mind having a pet Xenomorph.
-
I don't really care about NASA's funding right now. We're nowhere near the point where we need to evacuate Earth, and it's not like many asteroids/planets are near enough to mine.
-
Those are a product of engineering to aid in space exploration, not space exploration itself. Sooner or later a privatized industry or industries would provide significant contributions such as NASA. How about quoting almost any automotive company, Lockheed Martin, biomedical firms, etc. So we see that you cant tell the difference between engineering and space exploration, and think the former is a directly byproduct of the latter, which is a moronic notion. You should probably learn to use basic logic and analysis before further embarrassing yourself on this forum.

I disagree fully. How else am I gonna meet aliens? Oh wait, Vien.
-
It's a sorta-kinda thing in my opinion. While literally exploring space may not have many practical uses, many technological advancements have still come from the research and steps involved. For example, we'd never have velcrow if it weren't for space exploration.
-
Space exploration is the way forward. These 'other problems' we have; we've always had. We are no way near to ending their cycle. Run to the stars.
-
Its important but there are things hell of a lot more important going on.
-
Saying it's useless is false. Saying it's the most important thing ever is also false.
