Some of us were planning to do this a lot later in the future, and on a much bigger scale, but that was based on the assumption that the first Destiny reveal would be a lot farther down the road. With every indication that the big reveal will be this weekend, I think we should do this now. In order to celebrate Bungie’s past, and voice our support for the future, I propose that we as the community take part in a Marathon Infinity game night. Marathon Infinity is the final game of the Marathon series, and the spiritual predecessor to Halo. It’s currently free-ware, and available in both Windows and Mac flavors. Most modern carnage sessions take place in that game. Now, originally this was going to be something with about a month of build-up, and we might try something like that later, but for now the most realistic option is to piggy-back the event onto the usual “For Carnage Apply Within” Friday night carnage. Anyone who wants to show up is welcome, and the more people that show up the better. [b]Step 1: Get the Game[/b] [url] http://marathon.sourceforge.net/[/url] Click the download link below the image for Infinity. Save and extract that files anywhere. There will be file in the folder marked with a silver Marathon icon (labeled Marathon Infinity). Click that to start the game. [b]Step 2: Choose your Name[/b] (From the main menu) >Preferences >Player From here you should be able to edit your name (ignore the login information for now). You can choose any name you want. This is the name that will appear when you are in a game. In the lobby, you will appear as “guest#######”. Change this to an actual account, please read the advanced section. You can also set your controls from the Preferences menu. [b]Step 3: Play the Game[/b] (From the Main Menu) >Join Network Game >Find Internet Game This will take you to the main lobby. At the bottom of the screen is the universal chat field, and in the upper left corner is the list of players that are on. In the upper right corner you will see a list of available games. If a game is greyed out, it is either in-progress or full (if it’s marked “gathering” it hasn’t started). To join a game, click on the game listing and then “join.” Join will un-grey if the game is available. [b]Advanced-Step 2[/b] If you want to have a name outside of individual games (and not be auto-muted in the chat by some), you’ll need to get an account at [url]http://www.mariusnet.com/[/url]. It’s free and not much a hassle to set up. After you’ve set up your account, boot up Infinity again and go to the same place you set your game-name. Under “Find Internet Game Server”, enter your Marius username and password. Note: Mariusnet will allow you to have a 20+ character name, but you’re only able to enter 15 character names in Infinity. This will make it impossible to sign into your account in-game, and you’ll need to set up a new one. [b][u]FAQ[/b][/u] Q: I join a game but it says no one is in the room, and they can’t see me either. A: I’m not really sure what this is, but I think it has something to do with the host not having the right ports open. Best option is usually to find another game. Q: Do I need to download custom maps to play on them? A: Unlike Halo PC, only the host needs to have the maps downloaded. It would be cool to see extra people this week!
