I don't understand this feedback. When I replied to your comment, people could clearly see that there are replies to it (view the reply counter and the button to show replies). While it is true that nobody has to look at the replies already made to you before replying as well, this has always been true. In a flat view, this happens even more often, because there isn't an easy way to see all the replies made to you. This way, if you care what people have already said in response to your post, it is right there, in reply order. There are a few advantages of a flat threading model, but this is not one of the places where it holds the advantage.

A lot of people like to read Bungie posts specifically because there deemed more official. This issue still stands with or without replies, Replies just amplifies this specific issue. Imagine a Thread with 100+ posts and 100+ randomly placed replies in that thread and you know 100% there is a Bungie reply in that thread(you noticed it in the newest reply but a newer reply replaced it so cant just go to newest reply link) How do you find it asap? Go though thread opening every replied comment 1 by 1? That's the issue imo.

  • Actually, that was a script someone had created. Bungie never created that feature ;-)

If you could make it something like THIS with a Button to go to -Next Bungie post in thread- as well it would be appreciated. :)

Again, I'm not suggesting flattening the forum structure. I don't claim to have the solution... I'm only pointing out an issue with this structure. I think the big problem is that replies are hidden by default. While it's true that people can (and probably do) expand them, hiding them by default places less emphasis on them. In the old model, your post would have at least been as important (visually) as all the others and, in fact, would have been immediately visable to anyone who was keeping an eye on the thread.

  • Hiding them is the only way to allow the forum to perform at the capacity necessary. They aren't just hidden, they aren't even loaded. While different filters/sorts are possible, an "expand all conversations" option is not something we are likely to add. And this state of affairs is not different that the old bungie.net. If I replied to your post there, other people coming in later had no way to see all the replies to that post. Indeed, most just didn't care and replied despite the conversation taking a different turn later in the thread. Now, at least you have the ability to have all direct replies in one place, rather than having to jump to multiple discrete pages. You can't tell me that the old model it was possible to see all the replies to a particular comment, because it wasn't. Not only would they be intermixed with replies to other posts, unless someone quoted, you couldn't tell.

  • What about pages, could we ever see the return of pages to threads? I think it would be vastly preferable to infinite scrolling, especially with really long threads, where it is now virtually impossible to see the beginning of the thread. I propose that each page have 25 comments on it, and this would exclude replies to comments, which would be hidden as they are now.

  • This is a more complex issue than it appears. Say you're reading a thread. Where do you page break? Do you just count posts and then on the next page start where you were? That could be in the middle of a reply chain. Okay, so then say you only count on comments. Then you have the problem where we're loading too much data, and it crushes the servers. We are looking at the paging/scrolling, though, and think some tweaks are possible. We're still looking through the options though. No promises.

  • Reply threading and flat views are not exclusive. You maintain some indication of threading on the flat view (a la 4chan's in reply to/replies to link/mouseover feature), and provide a link to "show conversation thread" or similar for those who just want to view that particular strand of conversation. The fact the what-was-replied-to-what information is maintained even means you can keep the current threaded view as an option if you wish, for those peculiar folks who prefer it.

  • They are not technically exclusive, true. However, engineering concerns are not what is at play here. Switching between a flat and threaded view is not a desirable trait from a design perspective. In the short term, I recommend following employees so you can see when they speak up in your activity feed. The problem of an "important" (employee) replying in a nested reply chain is not new - and isn't solved by a flat forum view. We are aware of it, and realize there may be a few ways we can make it better. A flat forum view is not currently something on the table, though.

  • The problem I'm having with the activity feed is that when multiple people I follow respond to the same topic there is no longer a way to jump to their reply like there is when only one person does.

  •
Okay, so then say you only count on comments. Then you have the problem where we're loading too much data, and it crushes the servers.
What I meant is that each page would contain 25 comments, and the reply chains would be collapsed as they are now, and when you click to view the replies, it loads them just as it does currently. Wouldn't this cause virtually no change to the site, except that it would be easier to sort things? Also, is there any possibility of a chronological post order option in the future?

  • Both are technically possible, but there is a big jump from possible to "are we going to do it". We'll see.

  • I think the majority of users would like to see these changes made, it's one of the most widespread suggestions / complaints that I've seen since the update.

  • I don't mind the way the replies are, but i would like to see where Bungie employees reply a comment. I don't want' to miss the funny stuff.

  • I do, in fact i check first the activity then the forums. But if i want to see the where exactly they replied, i have to go to their profile and look at the latest one. Some times more than 2 employees reply in the same thread so i have to go to all of their profiles. I guess i'm too lazy
