Public group topics - What's the point?

This isn't a complaint or criticism... It's a legitimate question. I've seen a few different examples of topics that various groups have decided to make availible to the public and I'm left asking "Why?" Most of these topics seem to be particularly well-suited for private group discussion or for public discussion, but not both. There are two examples I can think of where it makes perfect sense for a group topic to be made public: 1) The group is recruiting members. 2) The group is advertising for some sort of event (like a game night). Can anyone else think of more good reasons? I feel like there's a trick to this feature that we haven't figured out yet. What do you suppose did the development team have in mind when they designed it?

  • Recently created a group for PAX2013. The ability to push threads to the public serves multiple purposes. 1. Group Recruitment - It gets the group out there without me having to say "HEY, COME JOIN MY GROUP." It's more a 'Hey, I posted this in my group and I think it applies to the entire community. Let's all conversate!' 2. Community Advertisement - I personally recommend everyone on this damn website go to PAX and meet community members face to face. While I understand, the world is a dangerous place and you can't always trust the person behind the username, there are multitudes of awesome people here that are worth meeting and spending time with. 3. Less Crossposting - There have been a few times in the past where I've posted something to a private group, and then recreated that thread in the mains. Now I can just have a single one! As for other groups I'm in, there are quite a few members who literally log into bungie.net for the purpose of that private group. Being able to push a thread to the mains allows fresh faces to interact with members of our little corner. Maybe not group recruitment, but another sort of community involvement.
