Another suggestion - Reputation

As I was browsing the forums and exercising my control over my own bnext experience, I got to thinking... Wouldn't it be nice if the other users were notified when their topics were hidden or when they were muted by other users? Surely, that would teach them. But that would probably be a little harsh... With a community this size, people would likely be bombarded with notifications. But still, wouldn't it be nice if people knew how they were viewed by the community at large? Then, it hit me... Reputation. When I play on Xbox Live, I can see the percentage of people who have chosen to avoid me in the future and for what reasons. This gives me insight into how I am perceived and how to alter my behaviour in the future if I wish to change that. I think it would be nice if we could implement a similar system here, users could see statistics about how other users have reacted to their topics and posts in the past. I don't think this information should be made public, but I do think it would be handy for people's own personal use. What do you think?

  • The last site I was a regular of, I had a reputation beyond -50,000. I know how I'm viewed.

    • When do reputation systems ever work? On XBL it only accounts for people that actually took the time to submit a review, which makes it pointless to begin with. Even if it didn't work like that, I've never seen anyone actually care about their rep on a forum.

For years I've had a high avoidance rate on Live for "trash talking" despite the fact I didn't own or use a mic. People just get buttmad and avoid you when you beat them in a match. Such a system would suffer the same fate here; people would just mute/avoid/dislike you just because they don't like you or don't agree with some opinion. And the last thing this forum needs is another stupid gimmicky feature. Go poke people on Facebook or something.

      • I agree with Hylebos. I think you should be notified once a large number of people have chosen to mute you. A punishment doesn't really serve a purpose unless the user can learn from it.

I don't think specific names should be mentioned, it should just mention you have been muted by a user. Would be interesting to see how many people have muted you though. Even making that number public might not be a bad thing either. Showing thread 'likes' might give a fairer balance too.

      • I would like some form of notification to let users know when they have been muted by a large number of people or they are about to put on the global mute list. Honestly, punishment that does not encourage reform is useless. Naturally it needs to be balanced so that such a feature does not become a "Oh hey! Time to make an alternate account and start over!" notification for trolls or jerks, but I definitely think it's a neccessary feature.

        • Nah then this place would remind me of a hentai website I go to that has forums and a rep system. I don't want to be reminded of that when I come here.

        • No way. My rep on Xbox is bad. More people dislike you than like you so it's pointless. Well that's what happens on the Xbox anyway..

This made me think about how I used to get feedback (Bungie.old). Others would just tell me. This feature is more easily available now as we can respond to individual comments too. Being ignored also gives you feedback. You should have confidence BBB that your ideas, at least, aren't being ignored. On the other hand, whether or not a community this size and disparate can be relied upon to give appropriate feedback is questionable. Maybe some personal way of seeing mutes/hides might be useful.

                • If you want to let someone know that they're disliked why not just call them a dick in a post? Pretty much as constructive and will get the same results.
Surely, that would teach them.
I don't think so. There is a way to dissuade these posts and they are called replies. If a user is conscious about their posts, then they will read the replies and get a feeling of how everyone thinks of them. The users that don't care, probably wouldn't care either way. I say good effort, but unfortunately, no.

                • I feel we should really rule out anything that adds external bias to a post. Reputation doesn't reflect individual posts, it reflects the poster. In terms of credibility, it can be as helpful as harmful, just because someone is incorrect or negative about certain topics doesn't mean this will hold true in others. Even if, post-edit, you decided to make it only viewable to the user, all this "improving behavior" stuff is horrifying. If you want us to socialize each other until we all act the same, this place will be boring. Additionally, not everyone has the same set of values, so helping to "correct" each other would just result in insults and confusion. I'm sure you don't want me to lecture you on your excessive use of ellipses.

                • No. I can foresee a great deal of abuse of a karma system. As others have said, it could lead to a sense of elitism. Furthermore, people could hurt the reputation of a user simply because they gave an unpopular opinion.

                  • Like a karma system like other forums have? That would lead to even more elitism than the title bars. I don't think that or a post count would be a good idea.

                      • I was thinking about this the other day. Users could literally look and see just how despised they are by the community for posting stupid drivel. It does raise a question though, if they are hidden and they change their behaviour, what good does that do? No one will notice.
