Public group topics - What's the point?

This isn't a complaint or criticism... It's a legitimate question. I've seen a few different examples of topics that various groups have decided to make availible to the public and I'm left asking "Why?" Most of these topics seem to be particularly well-suited for private group discussion or for public discussion, but not both. There are two examples I can think of where it makes perfect sense for a group topic to be made public: 1) The group is recruiting members. 2) The group is advertising for some sort of event (like a game night). Can anyone else think of more good reasons? I feel like there's a trick to this feature that we haven't figured out yet. What do you suppose did the development team have in mind when they designed it?

  • 1. Make cool group that everyone wants to join. 2. Acquire groupies, but don't let them in. 3. Keep peasants... groupies... sated with public threads. 4. ??????? 5. PROFIT!

  • Well for the Coup Group I can see it being very useful for making public announcements about the script. Might make one soon :) (hint hint)

I guess if you favor the opinion of a certain group, perhaps the subject matter is something a particular group like to talk about, for instance forge maps in a forge group. But, you still feel opinions of other people perhaps less interested or knowledgeable will still be worth a read.

  • i think it's also rather useful in showing exactly what goes on in a certain group. i see people talking about Secular Sevens like it's an Atheists-only God-bashing group, so being able to make a thread from within public should help remove such assumptions.

  • This is exactly what I was hoping for this this topic... Thank you all. I think the community as a whole is still figuring out how best to use this feature, but it sounds like a few of you already have a good start on that.

  • Recently created a group for PAX2013. The ability to push threads to the public serves multiple purposes. 1. Group Recruitment - It gets the group out there without me having to say "HEY, COME JOIN MY GROUP." It's more a 'Hey, I posted this in my group and I think it applies to the entire community. Let's all conversate!' 2. Community Advertisement - I personally recommend everyone on this damn website go to PAX and meet community members face to face. While I understand, the world is a dangerous place and you can't always trust the person behind the username, there are multitudes of awesome people here that are worth meeting and spending time with. 3. Less Crossposting - There have been a few times in the past where I've posted something to a private group, and then recreated that thread in the mains. Now I can just have a single one! As for other groups I'm in, there are quite a few members who literally log into bungie.net for the purpose of that private group. Being able to push a thread to the mains allows fresh faces to interact with members of our little corner. Maybe not group recruitment, but another sort of community involvement.

In my case, the group #HaloForum is supposed to function as a central Halo Forum, therefore there are no reasons for it to be private. Public topics provide exposure, make hosting gaming events 10x more convenient, and prevent me from creating duplicate threads in separate locations. It ultimately creates a more community-driven forum, but there are still options for member-exclusive topics. I never liked the name 'private groups'. I don't have a problem with admins who want exclusive clubs or whatever, but I generally like to create communities where anyone can participate. This was more difficult in the past because you couldn't see topics until you were a member of a group, and people either didn't have room to join more groups or didn't want to take the extra time to visit the forum. I've been linked threads from groups that I wasn't a member of many times as well. B.next changes all of this for the better IMO

  • The point ... hell everyone knows its the dot above the letter i .. right smack bang in the middle of the word. And the development team ... well it kinda came with the original freeware and there was nothing in the manual (first 5 pages anyways) on how to turn it off.

As for UI fails ... what about the lack pf feedback when you hit that post button. Sure thats on page 1 of any design manual.

  •
1) The group is recruiting members. 2) The group is advertising for some sort of event (like a game night).
Those are two very strong uses for the new feature. I like your thinking. Imagine now if a group wanted to lead a conversation about games, or share something they created. Remember the Classifieds board? It wasn't really an effective way for groups to promote themselves. Now, if a group has something worth sharing with the entire community, they can host a discussion that they can control. If the shared conversation goes sour, they can always lock it down and bring it back in house. The best way for a group to stay strong is to create a message that will help new people become interested in them, and welcome new blood into their ranks. The ability to host a conversation on the main forums gives a group new power.

    • Because a lot of people use to make topics both on private forums and public forums. Now they don't have to go through the trouble of making the thread twice and can combine the posts.
