Another suggestion - Watched / Followed Topics

So, we already have the option of being notified when someone replies to a topic we've created... What about having an option to be notified of replies to a topic that we're interested in? Maybe I didn't create the topic and maybe the replies aren't to me directly, but I'm still interested in following the discussion. This could be a separate option, or could be integrated with the "Like" functionality that already exists... What do you think?

  • Just as long as the notifications stack. I always get 1 notification every time somebody replies to my posts. 1 notification seems more than sufficient. For example the notification could say "New replies in the topic 'thread title' you are following" Only after I have viewed it will I continue to get notifications for further replies.

  • Yeah this is a good idead in my opinion. I wouldn't mind getting notifications when watched/followed topics are replied to, particularly colder topics that you are curious about that maybe get lost/don't get many replies.

That sounds really good. I especially like your thought of integrating it with the "Like" button, it gives the Like more purpose. Of course you should also have the option to stop getting updates if the conversation stops being interesting or if the thread is extremely popular and is constantly getting new comments (To combat a notification explosion).

  • It's a good idea. You may also (using existing features/tools) want to consider following the OP and/or various members who are making interesting (to you) replies in that topic. Then your "Activity" log (in the upper left, not your personal activity in your profile) will show when those members post/reply.

    • That's a really good idea. It'll let us know when new posts are made in threads that we've already posted in, or at least that we are interested in carrying a further discussion in. I'm all for that. I think it should have it's own button though, perhaps "subscribe" or something. Liking a thread is just a way to show support for the OP and the discussion. Subscribing to a thread would tell you when new posts were made.

So, it sounds like there is some agreement on this topic. Let me generalize the suggestion even further... I think the system should ideally allow people to "follow" specific tags, users, or individual topics (the point of this discussion). There should also be notification options for each of these. Furthermore, these items should all be used to populate our personal Activity feeds. (On another note, the Activity feed should be made more obvious and should include separate lists for tags, users, and topics followed.) Conversely, we should also be able to hide / mute specific tags, users, or topics. All of these are currently possible, except for hiding / muting specific tags. I'm hopeful that will be implemnented at some point as well. Can we all still agree on these points? Anything else to add?

      • Sounds awesome to me. Also Bungie, if you read this, you could do something similar to Google Labs, where there is a menu full of BETA features which, at our own peril, that we could enable. I for one have had GMail SMS beta enabled for the past couple years and totally love it. Plus their "Extra Emoji" option, etc.

Sounds like a cool feature and could work.. If nothing else I would like to see it at least have a chance to see how it goes. I need to use the Activity feature better still though. Thats a good feature and I hope people are using it and every other feature to there advantage for that matter. But again good idea OP!

      • You can somewhat do that with the notifications. Just set them all except for changed settings and notifications.

      • "Subscribed Threads" in other words? Yes, this would be a neat feature. I use it a lot on another forum.

      • hmmmmmm...I think I like it. I also like it being incorporated into the save thread option.

      • If (when?) the saved threads feature returns I think that would probably be the best place to integrate a system like that. Any time a thread that you've saved is replied to you get a notification. If you have a lot of saved threads you could have the ability to turn on and off notifications for individual threads that you have saved.

      • I'd have it separate to like. Case A: I don't want to see people replies in this thread, which I liked. Case B: I don't want to have to like a thread to follow it (I might not like it)

Excellent suggestion. In the future, I hope to see more and more options available to customize my experience on this site. I'd like the activity page to be a fully customizable hub that let's me follow threads, people, and groups in any manner I choose. When I log in, the activity hub should be my "go to" section to catch up on what I've missed. It should be the first place I want to visit each day. And rather than it being tucked away in a drop-down menu, it should instead reflect it's importance by replacing the notifications icon on the top bar. The merged icon would still list any notifications and show them in a drop-down when hovered, but when clicked, it would take you to a notification section of the activity page.

This is a good idea. I don't seen any cons with this.

Along the same lines, it would be similar to "subscribing to a thread" or "following a thread". Perhaps it could even be included in the "like" feature as you mentioned. So for instance, when you "like" a thread, that could add it to a separate list of threads in your profile. Then you can set your notifications based on what you want from that liked thread. Notifications for: -Whenever there are "unread" posts since you last checked -When anyone posts in the thread -When only people you follow, posts in that thread -When the thread reaches a new status (IE Debated, Top Forum Topic, Hot Topic etc) -When the thread is closed, or globally muted -When a Bungie Employee posts in the thread Subscribing to a thread works the same way in most other forum outlets. But I definitely agree with this idea. Many times, I don't care to post in a thread, but just lurk and read for information. This feature would be a lurker's dream.
