Currently, the people with money are, say, 35-45 years old, and thanks to this Radio Stations play what sells (stuff from the 70's - 80's). Come twenty years from now, radio stations will be playing the stuff that's from the 90's and 00's. When Classic Rock began, it was new. Duh. Basically, Classic Rock got the Cold Shoulder; one was "weird" to like it. Simply put: history is repeating itself.
