I had made a similar thread. I am in agreeance with you. I think threre needs to be something to work towards. A part from my thread:
Bungie has always provided the community with some sort of ability to have something to work towards. Some examples include Halo 3 Recon (before it was given to everyone), Bungie favorites in Halo 3, Bungie all stars custom nameplates, custom titles on Bungie.net (e.g. Theme Master), colored title bars, titles & prefixes, as well as other things. From what I can tell these things have always fueled creativity and greatness in the community. It has always given them something to strive for and to work towards. In the new update of the site, short of achieving moderation or employee status, there does not seem to be any physical representations of excellence achievable.
If people have something to work towards, they are more likely to be a productive member of the community. There are a multitude of things that could be used to encourage member investment. Like you said, currently there is not much. There are your number of friends, number of members in your group, and being a ninja. I feel that even something as simple as a number indicating the cumulative amont of likes you have received on your posts could be a step in the right direction. Obviously this is not the only possibility. In fact, I think the ability to track any sort of metric would be beneficial. Some would lead to a "gaming" of the system, while others would not. The idea of badges is also a good one. I don't think there is a necessity for anything as flashy as titles though. Also, in my thread it was stated: DeeJ:
It’s all about you, isn’t it? Please remember that this is a test. The public beta for Bungie.net is a chance for us to work out the kinks and collect some feedback on how we can make things better. That means we’re not finished rolling out all the bells and whistles. In time, we'll be celebrating and decorating the long-standing members of our community. Your legacy will be honored. For now, you are anonymous crash test dummies; so rev those engines and aim for the wall.
• Very well said. I love your suggestion of the cumulative amount of likes one has received, though I would leave that for the profile. Truth be told, I like having everyone be on an even footing while posting in the forums. I'm not dismissing the idea entirely, but I'd prefer only flashy things to appear on the profile page of a user. If we follow a user and get involved in their profile, we learn about them, their interests and activity on the site, and we see their content and might be apt to share it. That said, with tracking metrics, you'll have people game the system. Its inevitable. People did it with titles, or attempted to. But, if titles are selectable based on a range of unlocks and tiers, then it isn't so much a big deal. With enough of them, people will want the title they want and with individuals able to mute users and ignore things they don't like, if someone wants to game the system, let them. It doesn't matter in the long-run unless the reward is in-game.
