What are your thoughts on the morality/legality of the following issues:

1. I own the Game of Thrones books (A Song of Fire and Ice series). Sometimes, I don't want to have to lug a book around. I'd rather be able to just read them from my phone/tablet. I go online, and download the ebooks, without paying of course. I use them only for my own benefit, and I do not share them with friends/family. 2. I love Fallout 3. Played for multiple hundreds of hours on my 360. I want to check out some mods, and various other options that the PC version allows. I download Fallout 3 for PC, without paying of course, and proceed to play through the entire game. Thoughts on these? Is it illegal or wrong for someone to do either of these? If so, why?

  • OK, on both, you are violating the law, and should be treated as a criminal. What you failed, rather spectacularly, to understand is that when you buy either the book or a game disk that you do not own what is in or on that medium. You have purchased a license to interact with that medium as defined in the EULA or copyright. For a book you have to look in the first few pages, for a game read the eula. Its listed right there. Just because you didn't share it with anyone else does not mean you have the right to it. Its stolen property. If you rob a bank and just pile the money in your room to stare at, not spend, its no less stolen and no less illegal. Even if the government could just reprint the money you stole...
