It's illegal to download something for free if whoever owns the rights to it doesn't make it free. It doesn't matter what other versions of the product you have or what you're using it for.

Ok, a similar question for you then. If my friend owns a game, let's say Skyrim for the 360, and he finishes it and gives it to me, is that wrong?

First Sale Doctrine states that the person that buys the item from the original owner can do whatever they want with it, including selling it and giving it away.

No. There's no law against giving your product to someone else (as a license transfer). But he can't keep a copy for himself.

Ahh, he can't keep a copy for himself. Makes sense. But I could, however, listen to a CD, decide I'm done with it, upload it to a file sharing site, and then delete it off of my hard drive, yes? As long as I don't keep a copy for myself it's all good, right?

That's sort of like buying a book, reprinting it a thousand times, giving the copies away for free, and then burning the original copy.
