Instead of making the timing different on melees, how about you make more of a difference on each weapon when you melee? Now theres almost no difference between a smack with an assault rifle and with a brute shot, and in the end of Halo 2 you really stressed making each weapon fairly different from eachother when it came down to melees. If the assault rifle, or example, was lowered to 50 or so instead of 70 when hitting, then it would take 3 hits to kill someone with it, which really makes more sense. It would then give the blades on brute weapons a real purpose, and would be more important in gameplay.
There would also be less complaints on melee system, because chances are, there would be less close range fights. That would halo more like halo, instead of smackdown.
Maybe his wouldn't work, because I have no way of knowing unless I were to set it up in the games programming. You can't make certain weapons' melees stronger or weaker in forge. But I hope you at list try it out a few times; I really do think that would clear up the melee complaints for the most part.
