• Don't know if anyone said this yet... It's the High Ground gate being opened, heard it to many times now as I watched the other team escape with the flag on a mongoose out our front door...

 • The sound in halo 3 is great but why no center channel in dolby digital? It just doesnt make sense and leaves a big hole in the sound IMO.

 • These guys add the freaking sweeeeet icing onto an already delicious cake and their work is very much appreciated. I distinctly remember the first time playing halo 2 on surround sound, and the first time on my big screen plasma. As exciting as it was, playing this Beta with surround sound and on a plasma blows it away. [Edited on 05.30.2007 1:44 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Dickman
Posted by: CamouflagedVirus hmmmm.... It sounded like a three pin locked door with the pins being about 1 and a half to 2 inches thick being turned open. The lock is old and is easily overturned so that it hits the inner locking mechanism, and then it slides open. but by the sound of the slide it is not that wide of a door, and it sounds like rock on rock instead of the screaching sound old metal would have. So it has to be a ston door with an intergrated locking metal system within it. ....and from what I had seen forerunners do not build their machines through nature like how earth does but within it...perhaps a door of the forerunners leading into a room where earths secret past of forerunner run ins? or a forerunner door leading into an epic battle makeing that suond, the sound that send shivers through your body as you replay the campaign level, because you know what is behind the door? We can only hope so.....
I thought it was stone-on-stone too at the end. But if you listen closely it's not so much of a scraping sound as much as it is a fluctuating resonance. The sound isn't a solid creak or scrape, it sounds more like an oscillating vibration from mechanical equipment (like engines/motors or even possibly gears).
I can see, or actually hear, your point. If the door was extremely heavy then it could be gears, but by the sound of the outdated lock mechanism I would have to go foreword and suggest that the opening door is old, and if it did use mechanical method of opening it I would be sure enough to say that the metal would be old as well as the lock and make a older sound. It would be more of a screech of metal more over then a smooth opening metalic sound. However the beauty of bungie is being able to openmindingly think about all the aspects that is halo and see, hear, or even feel it in our own way. So you could be right, and I could be right, there is only one way to find out though, and when that day comes, I wil celebrate with style.

 • It's great to hear some news about the often-forgotten side of gaming. A more technical story after the game comes out (and the audio team has time) would be awesome.

 •
Posted by: ZaMaster360 For the people who're having problems listening to the sound: just right click and use save as to save file. This way you won't need the plugin. Btw great sound Bungie, but i'll probably start appreciating it more when i'm playing on Heroic or Normal.
Thanks for that. The door sounds...fascinating...to say the least. Most, even. I meant to say most.

 • I am not a fan of this Lukems. Either learn how to write, or let Frankie do it. I hope you don't pass these updates through an editor, because if you do then i would suggest finding a new one. [Edited on 05.29.2007 1:31 PM PDT]

The first time I heard it I remember thinking, "holy crap, what the hell was that?' ...
i must agree, the gun fire from a distance has to be the best audio addition on the game. its just so sweet and i love hearing the fire of sniper rifles from across the map... amazing

 • i agree, the sounds are awesome and more life-like. i feel like i'm right there in the battle. the sounds of the weapons from afar is also stupendous! the battle rifle, the sniper rifle, even the turret on the warthog, sound great in the distance - like a real battlefield. having been around weapons being shot and ammunition flying past my head, this is very realistc. if i could add some advice as to the music in halo 3 during the campaign. there's this one part in halo2 that just kicks butt: both because of the action and the music. it's one of the last levels you play as master chief, where you're running though the covenant ship. near the end of the level, you enter a large circular room where elites and hunters begin battling with brutes. just as you enter the room to see elites coming from the sides and hunters and brutes advancing towards each other on the ground below and in front of you, there's this sweet heavy metal music that begins playing! i could play this part over and over again, just for the music...but the music totally matches the situation: this feeling of "it's time to kick some a-bam!- " overwhelms you. i would love to have more music like that in halo 3 campaign: music that just makes you feel that "these bad guys are guying down...hard." anyone else feel the same way?

 •
Posted by: lemay71 i cannot stand the sound your com makes when talking to your partners but the rest of the sounds are awesome
lemay71 I'm glad you mentioned that. The way comchat sounds come into the game aren't the same way as in game sounds. I think shouting inside the base should echo... I can't remember if comchat sounds are direction based either; meaning if they are channeled through 5.1 or just overlay as stereo. If I look at it from a programming perspective, to "render" the audio into the game would require a separate audio module, that may cause some performance issues. So instead, they are probably just bypassing that and sending the audio right into the game. At least it's location base, so you can hear the other team discussing strategy inside their base. (Or we could have a sound gun, like in Mission Impossible, haahah) -Moose

The first time I heard it I remember thinking, "holy crap, what the hell was that?' That sound is second only to the guys in the original Tenchu that sounded like they said "hee-haw". man, that was awsome.
Yeah, I believe that is my second favorite. I always get cover when I hear; don't won't a "Puma" down my back.

 • Agreeably, as I see with most people who have responded to the article, Halo 3 sounds are excellent. I think the one thing that amazed me the most was the distant sound of the Mongoose in Vahalla. I honestly thought that it was the sound of people riding motorcycles on the highway that is along the other side of the river where I live. It wasn't until about 4 games later that I realized it was Halo 3 sound effects. Your probably wondering why I was unable to distinguish that from reality, but that kind of gives a hint to how well tuned my surround sound system is (hehe.) I certainly agree that the crossover between the sounds of weapons, grenades, vehicles and other aspects over a distance is an excellent display of nex-gen. I'll look forward to making future comments like "Wow, sombody got -blammed- up" after a large muffled 'bang' is heard. -MooseQuest.
