In Skyrim right now, I've decided that I will never fast travel on this character, so that quest lines (like the Civil war quest line) don't feel like they were over in an in game day, and to actually see the whole world that Bethesda created.

Use the werewolf, buy a horse, or become a vampire lord. Cuts travel time by two thirds.
We can at least agree on something. Horses in Skyrim are not useless.
Horses are great for hunting now, thanks to mounted combat. Good for taking on giants as well. Grab a bow, get some animal skins, or take out that giant that's been a little too close to the road. Although I don't like to kill giants. More of a dickish move, since they're peaceful and are handy dragon deterrents.
All they need to do now is bring back 1st person mode for horses. TES was always about what the player wanted and not being able to go into first person view while on the horse especially since it was in Oblivion rather made me a bit mad. Also, about the other post you made, yeah Skyrim's writing sucks. It seems they need to learn a thing or two from the Mass Effect franchise if we forget about ME3 of course.
