So about a week ago two rooms in my house flooded with about an inch of water. (Don't ask me how it happened). We moved the furniture and cleaned the water up with towels. Fast forward 5 days and the rooms are unbearable. There is the worst -blam!- smell coming out of them, we are thinking about getting the carpet replaced.
So, was it the water that caused the carpet to smell like this? If so, how?
Also one of the rooms happens to be my bedroom.

If you don't want to get sick, you'll stay at a hotel while the house is professionally cleaned. How do some people not understand this simple concept? water + house = bad
Well that would explain why my coughing and runny nose won't go away. Only the two rooms have carpet. Everything else is wood.
Wood absorbs moisture, so the walls have become a breeding ground for mold and other bad things. If you have wood under the carpet, it's even worse. You should get it looked at by professionals. They may have to replace part of the wall depending on how bad it is. How did you manage to fill up two rooms with an inch of water?
Broken pipe in my bathroom sink. Horrible mess to wake up too.
OK. Definitely call a professional cleaning company. Get that mold out of the house, or everyone is going to start getting sick. If you can, you should definitely arrange for someone to look at the damage and stay at a hotel while it's being fixed.

You should probably get the carpets replaced, because if you can't get liquid out, it will stay in or under the carpet and stink and grow mold etc.
-
Its mold. Getting the carpets cleaned will only changed will only fix part of the problem, as some moisture probably entered the wall. To put it simple, there is mold growing in that room in places you wouldn't even think of.
