Well this is stupid, even though it is a 50 cent fee
With that logic, how would a kid even get the console in the first place if he or she didn't have parental consent.
This seems like a way to make a quick chunk of change out of people who just bought a $300.00+ console for their kids.
Posted by: Noshotskill
Posted by: Wikked Navajoe Why don't they just make their consoles cost $300.50?
You guys do realize the 50 cent charge is not something for gain, its required by law. The charge serves as the parent's consent, allowing the child to access online features and user-created content. It basically protects Nintendo from potential lawsuits.
Real talk. Anyone who is honestly upset over this or making a big deal about it needs to stop and think.
Posted by: Wikked Navajoe Why don't they just make their consoles cost $300.50?
Not everyone uses the online features of the console.

So they are using the card to verify parental consent; why are you complaining about this?

Nintendo, why? Just, why? They make enough as it is. Ugh.

I'm fairly sure it has something to do with that Internet Child Privacy Protection Law Thing, or ICPPLT (pronounced "ick-plit").
Posted by: spawn031 That fee isn't to play online, that fee is for Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) that was implemented. It's part of the process for minors (13 and under). Nintendo isn't charging the fee out of their own profit, it's for that law.
IT'S JUST 50 -blam!- CENTS.
-
Guys, the credit information isn't stored, and in fact I don't a credit card can even be used with an underage account. This has nothing to do with kids using credits card without permission.

Damn Ken, you -blam!- about some of the stupidest -blam!- sometimes.
Posted by: SH4D0W0733
Posted by: BROWN HAWK I honestly do not understand what this is.
It is a quick and easy way of forcing someone to link a creditcard to their services thus making them more likely to make use of that link to use paid for services at a later date.
THIS IS NOT TRUE! You just made that up! As was addressed earlier, they do not keep the info on the system.

Why don't they just make their consoles cost $300.50?

how nintendo knows who is under 12 and who is over 12?

I lol'd... well, you know, the online equivalent of a lol. (I blew more air out of my nostrils than usual)

Ken. It's $60 annually. Not monthly.
Posted by: spartain ken 15
Posted by: CharlesBrown33 Isn't the Xbox LIVE Gold subscription like 60 dollars?
Yes but let me explain. Say you make an account on xbox live for your son or daughter and make it a "kids account" with kids settings, you are then billed 50 cents in addition to the $60.00 monthly fee.
Here's the deal, OP: It verifies that the kid's parents know their card will be on their kid's account. If the kid swipes their parents' card without them knowing, their parents will notice the charge to their card and will wonder where it came from, hence the kid might be caught red-handed. Also, if they have to ask their parents to use the card on their account, their parents will be aware of their card being on their kid's account and will know if the kid tries to use the card without their permission if they notice they have been charged for something they didn't buy, hence the kid will be caught red-handed. It's that simple. P.S. You're also trying to suggest that Nintendo are fleecing us by doing this; that it will add up to millions if millions of people do it and they shouldn't be charging a ONE-TIME fee of $0.50 just after they bought a $300 system, FOR CHILD ACCOUNTS ONLY. The Xbox 360 came out for a comparable price and asked for a $60 RECURRING fee to use online FOR ANY ACCOUNT. Not only that, but you had to buy extra equipment if you wanted a wireless connection. That's far worse, yet you say nothing about it. Did you forget? For Brits like me, a quick visit to XE has revealed that $0.50 is 30p (£0.30). Wow, expensive. No problem with paying £40 for Xbox Live and £20 (I think) for a wireless connector after buying a £280 Xbox 360 though. Nope, no problem at all... [Edited on 11.18.2012 12:33 PM PST]

So, the new wii will have an online? What's the point of charging you for this? How does it know you're a kid who's under 17?
Posted by: Hylebos
Posted by: spawn031
Posted by: spartain ken 15 There are no laws or regulations that require parental consent for kids to play an online video game, parental consent is not something that should concern a corporation as it is a FAMILY MATTER.
Posted by: Cpt Needa so even just 50 cents per player will add up.
Not much compared to the $60 for live. 120 Wii U $0.50= 1 person buying live for a year 1million Wii U $.50=8333 people buying live for 1 year And considering that you have to keep paying for live makes it even worse. Yeah it adds up, but not enough to matter. [Edited on 11.18.2012 11:45 AM PST]
