I just wrote a police officer a ticket

So today I saw a police officer parked in a yellow "no parking zone" But he wasn't responding to an emergency, He was at a 7-11 and he walked out with a big gulp. He was abusing his status as a police officer. And this is how I am about to knock him down a level for it. I live in Oregon. In Oregon it is a little known fact that you don't have to be a police officer, or a parking attendant to write someone a parking ticket. See ORS 153.058 Now back to the story. as the officer was coming out as soon as I saw that he was parked illegally I took a picture of him ( as he was coming out holding his big gulp, and of his car parked illegally. AND of him getting into his car. This is all of the evidence that I need to issue him a citation. I went on down to the police station and initiated the proceedings of filing the citation. Filled out his ticket, and took it down to the court house as per the instructions. At the courthouse I gave the nearly-finished ticket to the clerk who found an available court date. And then signed the ticket. And took an oath that the information was correct. This police officer is now going to receive the ticket in the mail with his court date. I will also be going to this court date where I will be presenting the photographic evidence of his illegal parking. He will have no excuse. tl;dr I wrote a police officer a ticket, and now he must appear in court. UPDATE: 500 replies w00t, I will be posting the pictures AFTER the court date. Due to legal/security reasons. [Edited on 11.18.2012 6:31 PM PST]

 • I don't get why OP is getting criticism for begin a law-abiding citizen. In the opposite scenario, the police officer would have done the exact same thing, apart from taking a picture as evidence. [Edited on 11.18.2012 10:52 AM PST]

I hope you're happy.
He parked illegally. Which is blatant misappropriation of his authority. Police officers are not exempt from the law. Had he been responding to an emergency I of course would not have wrote him the citation. But he was getting a soda from 7-11
Well then... [Edited on 11.18.2012 10:52 AM PST]

Whilst you were right in issuing a ticket, would it not have been easier just to walk over and tell the cop that he was in violation. The law allows warnings to be given, why shouldn't society? If he had been a dick about it, then granted you should proceed with the ticket. But as far as i'm concerned all you had to do was remind him.
"You did the right thing, And I am disgusted." If he had replied in an apologetic manner then that should be the end of it. HOWEVER If he threatened any legal action against you then proceed with the court case. I'm not as much disgusted just don't understand why you didn't handle it differently.

 •
Posted by: edableshoe And now OP has to spend one day in a court room. Not to mention they already spent one day doing all of that other stuff. You totally win bro.
I look forward to going to court and pounding my evidence on him, and hopefully getting a conviction. He truly has no argument. 1) Police call logs. There were no police calls in about a 3 block radius of this 7-11 2) Pictures of the officer walking out with a big gulp, and then entering his illegally parked car 3) If he was responding to an incident, he would have written a report which he could then present in court to show that he was there responding. But of course he does not have one.

 • I don't understand the whole "short break in a long shift" argument. If a doctor is on call for 24 hours straight, do you think he/she would get away with this without getting a ticket? Think the cop would stick around after writing a ticket to ask why you were parked there? And can we please drop the farce that the police exist for protection? They exist to create, restore, and maintain order. Protection is implied under that, sure, but that's not their primary purpose.

Man parks in emergency zone and gets ticketed: "Lazy retard, he deserved it, why didn't get park and walk half a block" Police officer parks in emergency zone and gets ticketed:" OMG Y U DO THAT YOU PATHETIC DOOSH BAG"
Thanks for putting words in my mouth, OP, but I can represent myself; a fair bit more eloquently than you can, at that.
That's quite alright. Everyone has their own response, which is fine. But a large portion of the flood has shown a similar response to the on I posted.
