They don't need to 'cater' to anyone, this is designed to set the stage for Halo 4's cast of human characters on the Infinity by giving them substance, and they're doing that beautifully. It's people like that who just want the Chief to remain a stoic brick because, for some reason, character growth is too much for them to comprehend and it "takes away from the action". If you haven't realised now, this is a universe with over 10 million years of lore in it. From the Precursors to the Forerunner legacy and the 'current' events, this is a huge sci-fi universe and in it are a number of characters with pivotal roles in the story. You can't care for a character if there's no substance to them, I wouldn't care about the characters in Firefly if they were just criminals on the run, for instance. What's "cheap to pull off" is just focusing on action throughout the whole thing. Character development requires thought and good writing, and FUD is pulling this off very well so far. Haters gonna hate.

I dont want it to be devoid of character development, just not a 99% focus on it. They are almost entirely focusing on characters prior to recently we didnt even know, did they have fans before now? They've got a limited budget spread out over a few episodes. What do you expect? That they go all pew-pew 99.99% of the time in each episode?? Established character development is what drives a good audience to have attachments toward specific characters when all hell is set loose upon these soldiers. Forward Unto Dawn is supposed to help establish the characters in Halo 4, there should be a lot of plot development.

I've enjoyed Forward Unto Dawn so far because I haven't taken it too seriously. I'm looking at these UNSC cadets as the same slightly goofy, devil-may-care humans that I fought alongside from halo CE to Halo 3. [Edited on 10.12.2012 9:57 AM PDT]

I didn't much care for the first episode, but this second one totally redeemed the series in my eyes. Are they going to release it as one continual movie when Halo 4 comes out?
