Iran to Deploy Navy off U.S. Coast? Lolwut?
Apparently so. [url]http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/27/world/meast/iran-navy/[/url]
Well, being that I live in America, this story intrigued me. No doubt I felt a little unsettled at first, but after doing some background research, I started laughing.
Iranian Navy:
3 WW2-era destroyers
5 Frigates
3 Corvettes
3 Diesel Powered Submarines
None of which even have the range to sail the 8000 nautical miles between New York and Iran, and also have no nuclear capabilities.
Plus they're doing this during the height of hurricane season.
On behalf of the United States I would like to thank the Islamic Republic of Iran for their generous donation to our artificial reef program.

Any updates on this situation? I've been searching the news and net and have heard nothing. Surely someone here knows something more. I'm concerned this manuever is a "bait and switch" type of thing. 1. Draw attention to U.S. Coast 2. Nuke Isreal. Scary stuff. [Edited on 09.29.2011 2:09 PM PDT]

Utterly laughable. Either this is an empty 'threat', a source of propaganda for their own people, or they are genuinely so stupid that they think America will be in any way intimidated by their presence in the Atlantic. If their ships were actually capable of reaching the US East Coast (which they most likely aren't), then their presence would certainly be irksome. It would be interesting to see what would happen if the Iranian Navy stationed themselves in the major shipping lanes between the US and Europe.

The point is that they're obsolete now. They haven't set to sea in 15 years and their missile systems are outdated. Surface battle is obsolete. These ships are useless.
