"Error Code: Monkey" Returning Player

So I redownloaded D2 after not playing for a few years. Saw I could keep my old characters but anytime I load in, the game is fine until I kill an enemy. At this point I get sent back to the hub with "error code: monkey". Tried replacing my old gear with new items but no luck - same error. Don't really want to start again with a new character and by the looks of the forum I'm not the only player with this issue...

  • Hi there! Bungie is aware of an increase of MONKEY error codes and they are currently investigating. Please do not delete any characters as once they are deleted, they cannot be restored for any reason and all progress will be lost. Please continue to monitor BungieHelp on Twitter and the weekly blog posts for updates on this and other known issues.

    • I’m in your shoes so I wanted to post this for what it’s worth; I transferred all my secondary characters stuff to Vault, deleted it, and started fresh. Game still started me off at 1600 light and even has a whole new intro. So essentially, deleting a character and starting over was similar to starting as a returning player (I stopped before shadow keep). It’s a whole new campaign thus far. Not sure when (what expansion) this happened or why exactly. No Ghaul/red legion campaign. So my main in a Hunter, and Titan is secondary. I transferred all my exotics over and restarted my titan. Starts you right at 1600 light. At least this way I can play Shadow Keep - Lightfall on my secondary character. May be worth doing if you’re dying to play like I was. I really didn’t lose anything I cared too much about. But I wouldn’t dare do this with my main Hunter.

      • Same here! Stopped playing when the first DLC came out due to my high school exam. Now I want to pick up this game again. The only way to fix this is to start a new character and transfer all my inventory to the new character.

        • I am having the same issue after doing a cross save. I want to play the game but I have no idea if I should disable cross save until it is fixed or not because of the 90 day wait period to re enable the cross save.
