Exotic Drop Rates on Legend/Master Lost Sector

TL:DR Drop rates on exotics in Lost Sectors needs Drop Protection and a Rate Change. I love the lost sector revamp. In the Beyond Light Expansion, Season of the Hunt, Destiny 2 added an optional loot mechanic for those who wanted to target farm exotic armor drops in harder content lost sectors. I remember spending 6-8 hours at a time grinding a lost sector for some god-roll transversive steps and stompees. I would grind the legend lost sector and get an exotic around every 3-5 clears (running under 3 minutes with no deaths). Great system, because even if the stat rolls were not optimal, you could feel confident in getting another exotic (hopefully the one you want) within another few runs. In Season of the Chosen, the drop rate was changed. Whether it was mentioned in a TWAB or patch notes, I can't remember. But I do know that it now took between 6-12 runs for an exotic to drop (legend). However this time, it was becoming increasingly rare to get a stat roll above 62, let alone good stat placement. In Season of the Chosen, I decided to put this to the test as to whether or not my RNG was just really piss-poor or if there was a change. I ran 216 lost sectors one night. No joke, 216 runs, almost all flawless, all of them under 3:30 in the exodus garden 2a legend lost sector. As a titan I got 3 ursa furiosas all under 58 stat roll and 1 icefall mantle at 59. That's it. 4 exotics in 216 runs. That's a drop rate of almost 2%. That killed my desire to run Lost Sectors for Exotics, even the new seasonal ones. It just wasn't worth getting an exotic w/ garbage stats just to have it. Season of the Splicer comes around, no changes mentioned but still a relatively low drop rate BUT new lost sectors and seasonal mods made running certain EDZ lost sectors at the master level in under 2 minutes much easier. Drop rate was semi-consistent at 1 exotic every 5-7-ish runs at the master level. However, stat rolls were very inconsistent, running from low 50s to mid 60s and every 100 or so runs maybe something 66 or higher (which isn't necessarily bad but far from Season 12). This season, Season of the Lost, I have been running legend and master lost sectors for hours at a time in an effort to secure some new loot (the exotics this season are really cool and have interesting perks). In 50 flawless runs in legend lost sectors, I have 0 exotic drops. In 23-ish flawless runs in Master Lost Sectors, I have 0 exotic drops. Garbage-tier RNG aside, that is completely ridiculous. Lost Sectors are not necessarily the best way to grind for Exotics in the game and I'm not advocating that they should be but there needs to be drop protection for players in these activities. AND these exotics need to be 60 stat roll and above. It is completely ridiculous that someone could run tens of lost sectors to get an exotic that is marginally better than something they could yank from collections. Scaling drop rates to completion-time and death-count is a start, but ensuring an exotic drop within 5 or 6 runs is a must. This is content on par, difficulty-wise, with nightfall strikes and should be somewhat as rewarding (save for, obviously weapons). Seeing as one cannot earn enhancement prisms or ascendant shards, it should be rewarding cores and exotics more frequently. I, like most, appreciate all the content that the Destiny 2 team continues to bring to its player-base, but one of the most frustrating aspects of gaming is inconsistency. I hope it gets addressed one day, because I really do love dropping in on some champions for some great loot.

  • So, 216 runs at 3.5 minutes per run? Yeah I’m sure you ran lost sectors for 12.5 hours “one night”.

    • Right now i'm running more than 100 times just to get a single boot, and i didn't get one yet. And the more you run, the worst is the reward. This isn't RNG...

      • I don't tend to touch Legends for this reason, it's way to common to have a dry spell. Masters seems to be a bit better, never had a very long dry spell doing those. I sometimes wonder if the longer, more difficult lost sector's that have more champions have a boosted drop rate. I have found that I tend to get less drops from the Cosmodrome sectors than I do from the Moon ones, for instance.
