It most definitely does not cost too much. It's so easy to masterwork your entire loadout, even just from getting the season pass ascendant shards. I masterworked my entire armor set in less than two days and I've never touched a master or grandmaster nightfall

I mean i have a vault full of hundreds of materials and a good deal of shards. Enough to masterwork whatever i like, but i love to swap mods in and out for every situation meaning i need multiple pieces of each energy type to access all options. That combined across multiple characters get to be quite expensive. And with sunsetting armor being a thing i don't think you should really have to dump so many resources into gear just to access one of the better aspects of the game.
