Bungie, I love you, but you need a new banning policy

@BNGSecurity I would like to start out by saying that I recently made a post that was not so friendly because I am kicking caffeine so I was grumpy. I feel bad and would like a chance to discuss the matter in my normal civilized demeanor. I promise this is the last post I’ll make on the subject so please respond to me. Bungie, I love you; I’ve been with you since the Marathon days, but the banning needs a rework. ALL OF THIS TEXT IS IMPORTANT TO THE POST! PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH! So, I’de been seeing a lot of posts about people getting banned for no reason but, just like everyone reading this, I disregarded their complaints assuming they were just cheaters wanting to cheat more. This mentality changed, however, when I was playing a game of rumble with 5 other randos, doing ok...ish... Ok, I was second place of the three people not AFK. ([REDACTED], something in Chinese characters, and [REDACTED] were afk with bots). I’ve also been on a loooong losing streak but I hate cheap players so much I just recently tried bygones, lord of wolves, spectral blades or hammerhead out of principal. But I digress. Long story short, I too was banned in the middle of the game for no reason. So naturally, I try to contact Bungie directly... which they have no way of doing... so I went to the forums and put a (regrettably) not so happy post (I am trying to kick caffeine so I was already grumpy to begin with). They actually responded and tell me that they had supposedly detected some sort of cheat program... yep, on a losing streak and they actually think I cheated... *slow claps* thanks, Bungie. Now, at first I was furious as I still have not found any cheat program on my pc and they refuse to tell me what it is, but I decided to break my caffeine free streak (thanks for that) and have a soda to look at things with a clear mind and I realized, while Bungie definitely gets some blame, it is their cheat bots and banning protocol that I am actually upset with. Thus I have composed a less “we think you may have possibly cheated but we’re trusting a robot over human analysis so get rekt” protocol. A ONE strike rule Step 1: Kick the player to the desktop and take away all of the player’s exotics and have them re-earn them and move the characters to level 0 and take away Xur for a year. Step 2: when they sign in, display a message saying something like “hold your horses! A cheating program has been detected on your PC! You have received a one month ban to remove the program and think about what you have done. If ANY cheat program is detected after the ban period, you will receive a permanent ban. Step 3: if a cheat program is detected after the ban period, smack ‘em with the ban hammer. This way, it is still a brutal punch to the gut, but ban situations like my own can be taken care of fairly (because it gives me ample time to deep clean my pc of any unwanted software) therefore eliminating a lot of angry posts about wrongful banning. And people will be able to continue paying for DLC or whatnot. During an upcoming reset have everyone who claimed their ban was wrong on the forums, including me, put to step 2 of my plan. I know you won’t just unban me because that’s not the way you roll, no matter the situation. So take all my characters and equipment down to level 0, take away my exotics, give me a one month ban, take away my Xur for a year. I don’t care. I just want my game I payed for and dumped countless hours into back so I can relax and play with my clan again. Again, I love you and your games, Bungie. But for the love of god, please change your ban rules. I have put literal days into the game, I’m a triumph hunter, I’ve completed the mercury forge, two seals and 5 collection badges and so much more 100% honestly! Only an idiot would put all of that hard work at risk.

  •
They actually responded and tell me that they had supposedly detected some sort of cheat program... yep, on a losing streak and they actually think I cheated... *slow claps* thanks, Bungie.

BNGSecurity Your account was banned for using a program created by a known cheating/hacking community specifically for the purpose of cheating in Destiny, on the afternoon of July 20th. Your ban has been reviewed and upheld.
They said one was detected, not that it worked. Also, on a losing streak is when some people may become desperate enough to try cheating applications.
Thus I have composed a less “we think you may have possibly cheated but we’re trusting a robot over human analysis so get rekt” protocol.
A company is always going to go with data over the claims of an accused. They can clearly see what was running, when it was running, and know it's purpose, why would the trust anything else?

  • If you suspect cheating or abuse, report them via the in game tool or the Manual Tool Bungie's SRT does not review forums for reports. Posting identifying information on the forum is against the Code of Conduct and can get you Ninja'd.

  • The only reason you want the ban policy changed is because you got caught trying to cheat. BNGSECURITY told you so. Accept it and move on.

    • First this is feedback and not for the help section. Second the ban policy is fine and protects the integrity of the game. Bungie doesnt have the time to sit back and get a long drawn out appeal process to decide who is supposedly right or wrong. The process is fine as is, and if you follow the rules, it wont affect you

      • Bungie had a policy like this I believe in D1 but since moving to Pc it’s become a whole other ball game. If you want to look at a terrible failed system for banning that’s been altered in the last years look at GTA. They had it at 3 steps before a ban but cheats keeps slipping thru and your account wasn’t even reset after each ban til the 3rd. Now they are at 2 step and it’s a reset then perma ban. And yet people still cheat because their anti cheat sucks. While I do agree there needs to at least 2 steps on PC it’s a player’s responsibility to having nothing that could be deemed as a cheat on their system while playing the game. I’ve seen people get banned on here for doing schoolwork on their pc while having the game open. A lot of the bans on here were worked out as running either cheat engine or a program that shouldn’t be on when playing. I don’t remember your case specifically but I would hazard a guess it was likely some program you had running either in the background or prior to launching D2. I don’t disagree with your argument here as to how the system should be laid out but PC is a strict policy and Bungie doesn’t have to or will give an approved list because as a PC user we all have some semblance of common sense.

I'm guessing when shadowkeep launches we'll see changes. The reason trials never returned was because of network manipulation cheating. Not to mention websites selling network manipulation services for video games like destiny. Bungie could be working on anti-cheat software.
