What is a Gamer, #Gaming?

The word Gamer is defined in the websters dictionary as:
a person who plays video games or participates in role-playing games.
That's such a skeletal categorisation of what being a Gamer is, and I think in the world as it is today and the industry of Game-making what it is, we should have a respectful discussion, about how to classify a Gamer. Is a gamer one who simply engages in games? Well no, the dictionary defines it as much more than that. "...A person who plays video games or participates in roleplaying games" two vastly populated and diverse offerings. Anybody would agree a football player though he is "playing a game" is an athlete and not a gamer, so we can wall of the realm of sports as totally unrelated to this discussion; But what about board game players, gamblers, hobby games- darts, cornhole, bocce (all arguably more skilled than athletic)... What about, dare I say it... mobile gamers? What is a Gamer?

      • In the sense of a video game gamer. One who plays video games as a hobby. You don't need a certain amount of time played. It isn't some prestigious thing only the elite can be. It's just a name for a person who enjoys playing games as a hobby. It is not a big deal, people need to stop making it one.

        • To me, it's more than simply someone who plays video games. It's someone who enjoys doing so. Which might sound like the same thing, but I don't think it is. If someone only plays mobile games, and only does so to pass away five minutes once a month, I don't consider that person a gamer. Not saying there's anything wrong with that, but it's a very different person to someone who spends an hour or so playing a game every day, and actively looks forward to doing so. I think there's also a separate category for passionate gamers - people who genuinely consider video games an art form, which is a different type of person again.

Gamer is a label that people usually apply to themselves. I know people who play video games but they wouldn’t call themselves “gamers”. It’s really only used by people who want to identify with that group and with “gamer culture” (whatever that is). It’s like someone who skates isn’t necessarily a “skater” unless they choose to identify themselves as such and engage in the skater culture. Gamer is a self identifying label people use to feel like they’re part of some sort of gaming culture or movement. I personally play a lot of video games but I wouldn’t call myself a “gamer” like it’s some sort of identifying label or something. There’s no label for someone who likes to watch TV or listen to music is there?

              • Anyone who plays video games. Whether they only play some f2p game once a week on their phone, or spend every minute of every day grinding out some MMO, a gamer is simply someone who plays video games.
