Easy Way to *Solo* Complete Ascendant Challenge This Week

Hello Guardians, I haven't seen any other posts on the subject yet, so I thought I'd give my advice on Soloing the Ascendant Challenge at a lower light level. I completed it on a Warlock at 509 light, so it's definitely doable around that level. After unlocking access to the Dreaming City, you'll want to grab the Ascendant Challenge bounty from Petra Venj in The Strand. The challenge itself is located in the Lost Sector right below her, but you'll need to have a "Tincture of Queensfoil" before you can access the challenge. I've had those drop from Public Events and Gold Region chests, and I've had better luck with the Region Chests. So use a Tincture of Queensfoil and you'll be given the "Ascended" buff. This allows you to see Taken-y things and hidden stuff that's normally, well, hidden. Once the buff is active, head in to the Lost Sector and continue until a massive Taken portal spawns. I had it spawn right before the room with the Lost Sector boss, above some Phalanxes. Loadout wise, I'd recommend bringing a shotgun to kill Blights and a weapon with Dragonfly or Outlaw for the wave clear. I used Ace of Spades and was able to kill the blights in one buffed mag each. Inside the portal, you'll land in an Ascendant room. There are shielded crystals in the center and 4 Taken Blights on the edges of the area. The goal is to destroy all four Blights and then the crystals without dying. Shadow Thrall will spawn pretty continuously to mob you, but they only come in packs of five or six, so a good wave clear primary should do the job. There are also two separate Hive Champions (Alak-Hul the Darkblade from D1) that teleport in and out to try and slam you. Don't worry about fighting the bosses - they'll despawn when all the crystals are destroyed. Just keep moving and they won't be able to one-shot you. You'll know when a boss is spawning near you when a message about a Knight appearing pops up on the HUD. Once you kill a couple blights, one boss will aggro and move much faster. You should still be able to dodge him by jumping across the empty spaces - they have to stay on the land/bridges. Once all four Blights are done, you'll get a message that says "An Opportunity". This means the crystals are unshielded and ready to destroy. This is the tricky part. There are waves of Thrall and the two aggro'd bosses that will run around trying to kill you while you focus on the crystals. I was able to burst glide around the room, shooting the crystals in mid jump until all were gone. My advice is to stay super mobile, ignore the ads, and put potshots in to the crystals when you can. The bosses will spawn on top of you, slam, and despawn which can be a nice little reprieve if timed right. If you die, then you're removed from the Ascendant realm and have to go through the portal and try again from the beginning, but the Ascendant buff won't disappear so you can try as many times as it takes. Keep patient and keep moving, and you should be fine. Open the chest after destroying the crystals and you'll be rewarded some sweet Dreaming City loot at a higher light level. Good luck!
(HOUNDISH also has a walk-through video on YouTube).
I went into the lost sector and the portal isn't here. Are they on a rotation?

  • I died by knight sword as soon as I shot last Crystal. The triumph unlocked but not the bounty, the portal doesn't spawn back to let you in. I couldn't get the chest or reward. ☹️ It won't let me redo it because it thinks it's complete.

    • Did anyone else notice the "other" crystals? After I completed it and opened the chest...I had a look around......there were at least 2 more crystals in more hidden places (one was down under a bridge on a ledge etc). They were immune, but wondered if taking these out first before the ones in the centre may be possible. Not had a chance to retry yet but if you've seen these and know their purpose, please share. Thanks

    • There's a rock formation in one corner and one closer to the center area you can stand on and cheese it if you can't get through it easily. You can see most crystals from them.
