The Dark Guardian - Chapter 27: The Ultimate Dichotomy

Location: Dreadnaught, Savathun's throne Third Person POV As Ian walked through the cavernous hall leading to the throne, Para stepped forward blocking his path. Her grip tightened as she looked into the face of the hunter who was once a dear friend. At least, he had been, until he slaughtered Sara and Cameron. As the Exo drew closer, he called out to the Walker, saying: "Para, It's good to see you again. How have you been, good I hope?" Para gritted her teeth. Ian was mocking her! Her reply was laced with venom and hatred. "Shut. Up. You know how I've been. You murdered our friends, and you saunter in here as if I don't know? Are you stupid or do you just have a death wish?! Ian replied with a hollow laugh. "Oh, I just have a death wish. But I didn't murder your friends, I freed them. Para folded her arms is skepticism. "Freed them from what?" The hunter began spinning his knife around his finger in a hypnotic twirl. "I released them from a contract to a power that destroys for the sake of destruction. Does it absolve me for any of the acts I committed under it's influence? No, not in the slightest." "You've got that right. It absolves you of nothing. You're about to pay for what you've done." Ian groaned in disappointment. "Oh for the love of Light, can you Walkers come up with something more creative than You're going to pay? Seriously, it gets repetitive. Sara, Cam, and now you, all of of you have said it in one way or another. And if you can't think of anything else to say, at least back it up with a measure of skill. Para blinked in surprise. "You're about to die, and you're complaining about unoriginal threats?" Ian smiled darkly, and then dashed forward, slicing a shallow gash into Para's side. "It got you off balance, didn't it?" Para gasped as she pressed a hand to her wound. The cut wasn't deep, nor did it bleed heavily, but it hurt like hell, and that could end up costing her this fight. "Gah, you son of a bitch! You're going to die, just like every last pathetic innocent in that damned City!" Ian's next words were as serious as a heart attack. "Prove it." Para accepted the challenge, spreading her wings and flying towards the Hunter, scythe at the ready. Ian was forced to duck, barely dodging the dark blade. As he straightened, he began firing at Para, unleashing a hail of lead. But the bullets seemed to have no effect on her. So, he tried changing tactics, switching to his sniper rifle. The change didn't last, since Para quickly smashed the rifle into fragments. Swearing, Ian drew his knife. The two leaped towards the other, knife against scythe, Light against Dark. Over and over, they clashed, with Ian occasionally scoring a few cuts and dodging away every time. Eventually, filled with blind rage, Para used the shaft of Redeemer to attack instead of the blade. Ian was sent flying by the strike, and thus could not protect himself from being stabbed in the chest by Redeemer's dark blade. The Hunter gasped from the shock. It was like being impaled by a black hole. His energy, willpower, Light, the scythe devoured it all. As Ian closed his eyes, he noticed the elation on Para's face, and then he slipped into nothing.

Ian was inside a bright empty void. He looked around, and there was nothing, just endless expanses of nothing as far as he could see. "We really must stop meeting in these circumstances." Ian spun around, only to see the avatar of the Traveler from before. The same little girl, with the same pale hair and electric blue eyes. "Trust me, it wasn't my intention to die." The Traveler corrected him. "No, it wasn't your intention to die before your self-appointed task was completed. Afterwards was a different story all together, is it not?" Ian started to argue, but stopped. She was right. He had only gone on for this long because he had wanted to atone for his actions as a Walker. "Well, guess my wish was granted. But why are you here?" "Because you still have a task to complete." Ian started in surprise. What did she mean? He was dead, killed by a scythe-wielding psychopath intent on wiping out humanity. The Traveler continued. "I can raise you one last time. All traces of Darkness will be purged, at the cost of the associated powers. In short, become a Guardian again. You'll have the chance to kill Para, but if you die, I can't bring you back. You'll die permanently. If you want this, then it will be made so. Ian didn't hesitate. "Done. Revive me." The girl snapped her fingers. As Ian's vision began to fade, he heard the Traveler speak one last time. "Don't linger when you're called back here. You've got people waiting to see you once you're finished." Location: Dreadnaught, Savathun's throne As Ian opened his eyes, he was greeted by a look of abject shock on Para's face, with some rage and terror mixed in for good measure. When she next spoke, her speech was trembling with emotion. "Ian... What... How... How are you alive?!" She began to scream. "Why won't you die?! All I want is for this nightmare to end, but you won't leave me alone!" Ian stood up, his face a stoic mask. "I suppose it's true. There really is no rest for the wicked. Para's visage contorted into a seething mass of wrath and spite." "Don't mock me! I'll tear your head off if that's what it'll take to kill you!" Shouting, she leapt towards the Hunter, intent on cleaving him in two. As Redeemer's blade descended towards him, Ian made no attempt to dodge. Then, at the the last possible moment, his hand flew upwards, grabbing the scythe and stopping it cold. Though he felt the weapon draining his Light by the second, he still held on. If it wanted his Light, then it would get it. Ian channelled his Light into the scythe, changing the blade from a weapon of Darkness to one of Light. When he was finished, he swung Redeemer around, getting a feel for it. Once done, he faced Para, his new blade held firmly at his side. "Redeemer. I wonder if it can redeem you, Para." The Walker had retreated, a look of fear on her face. "What... How is that possible?" Ian smiled, spinning the scythe like a baton. "I think you have much bigger problems to worry about, wouldn't you agree?" Para swallowed nervously. "Maybe, but you'll have to go through my guards first!" Calling forth her Dark powers, Para summoned a battalion of Hive. Thralls, acolytes, knights, even a few ogres. Ian sighed and slashed the air in front of him with Redeemer, shooting out a pale crescent of energy that obliterated the first few ranks of Hive. He dealt with those left standing by plunging the blade into the ground, opening a fissure of Light that burnt the remaining Hive to cinders. Seeing the devastation wrought by Ian, Para made the sensible choice and fled, seeking Savathun's protection from the revenant wreaking havoc with her own weapon. When Ian noticed her attempting to escape the carnage, he quickly put paid to that plan. Pointing Redeemer at the fleeing Walker, Ian fired a bolt of bluish-white energy from the weapon's tip. The shot lanced toward Para, impacting the ground beside her and exploding with the force of a grenade. The blast flung her aside like a broken doll, sending her skidding across the rough chitinous ground. Para couldn't see anything, her vision disoriented by the explosion. Once her vision had cleared, she looked to where Ian was supposed to be, only to see him striding towards her, scythe in hand. She leapt to her feet and rushed towards her assailant, attacking with a terrified flurry of punches. Ian evaded or blocked all of her strikes, dodging around her frenzied blows. The next thing Para knew, her legs had been been swept out from under her by Redeemer's shaft and she was on the ground again, the scythe's blade inches from her neck. "It's time to stop running, Para." Para sneered in contempt. "Like hell it is. Even if I die, you can't protect that City forever. If it isn't the Hive, it'll be the Fallen, or the Cabal. Eventually, that City will burn." Ian shrugged nonchalantly. "Then we'll delay that day for as long as we can. But, I think it's time. Ready to see Sara and Cameron again?" Para's blood boiled at those words. She would kill him for that. The Walker lunged at Ian, trying to exact revenge. She didn't get very far.
