New Matchmaking Changes Have Made PvP Experience Worse (and a couple other gripes)

I honestly don't understand what kind of algorithm that you guys are using, but it isn't doing what you claim it is. As I understand it, the new matchmaking system is designed to help solo players that match against teams. This would mean that the teams are generally lower skill than the solo players in order to compensate for the difference between the ability to coordinate. Instead, I don't think I've ever had such a hard time finding good matches. Sure, I have more close matches than in previous seasons. But as a solo player, I consistently find that it is my responsibility to carry a team that has no interest in working together and would rather constantly run into a lane and get shredded by 4 people who are team shooting. This was fine in D1 because THE INDIVIDUAL PLAYER MATTERED. Single players could effect the entire outcome of a match because they weren't being relegated to passive team shooting and were appropriately rewarded for making big plays. This wasn't because there was no radar or some other crap like what has been done to Competitive. It's because INDIVIDUAL SKILL MATTERED IN D1 and that has not carried over to D2 because of the reduction in the overall speed of the game. I digress. The matches I'm most often solo queued in tend to have: 1. More high skilled players on the opposing team, regardless of team size. 2. More stacked teams that consist of high skill players. 3. More low skill solo players that are matched to my team. 4. More frequently placement in games in progress that are unwinnable. All this together has lead me to losing more matches that I ever have in D2 due to other players not contributing to the game. It is significantly less often that I'm matched with or against teams that actually fit the description of how the new matchmaking is supposed to work. I feel like this is the opposite of what was intended for this most recent matchmaking update and needs to be looked at. Update: To be specific, the above issues seem to be primarily a problem with Quickplay. Competitive needs changes as well, but primarily in order to provide real ranking and matches with similar skilled players.

I have no clue what they did wrong but I play solo or with a friend and I go against full teams or people who can destory my teammates I'm paired with. Just today I had a guy with a .2kd in comp and a .08kd in the game I was in. Being on top with over 20kills how am I paired with this player. I've lost about 400 points on rank ever since the new matchmaking and I'm done with comp. No matter how hard I try nothing I do allows us to come close to winning. From seeing people that just can't kill a soul or on control they spawn near a flag that is not ours (spawns flip) they run right by it. Or someone dies twice and leaves. Bungie if you make D3 leave PvP out of it.. you are clueless on how to make it work...

  • I’ve noticed that when I solo queue I face nothing but 3-4 stacks. Whatever they did has made it 100x worse than before.

    • Yeah man, multiple design choices made this game a MUCH more team oriented game. D1 teams still had an advantage, as they should, but it’s too lopsided now. 6v6 is honestly gonna be even worse with the slow TTKs. Most fights, you finish someone off, and someone who heads you fighting from across the map comes in from the side, taps you with one bummer from an auto and you’re dead. Rinse / repeat.

    • First off, I run a titan with double pulse nades, and I've been using G-Lance in crucible since before the buff, as its always had the same damage. I find I have a massive impact on the game, so in terms of that, player skill is involved (or just using the meta weapons and being somewhat decent). Also, if you're like me, you will have played crucible alot when D2 first dropped. I'm currently sitting at about a 1.6 KD, but it's not entirely accurate, as I'm not as good as I used to be. The matchmaking could potentially be matching you based off of your play ability from a previous time, but yet some of your skill could have deteriorated due to potentially taking a break or maybe just not playing crucible as much. If this isnt the case, then yeah call it broken as* matchmaking, because you're not the only one.

    • I was told by a pretty reliable source that how the system works is as follows: 4 stack vs solos, if the 4 stack stick together, they do less damage against opponents. If they stay apart, they have normal power. My source was not certain if the 4 stack stay together, if they take more damage or not. To me, its all bullschit. This is a team based game, that used to promote fireteams. You know, a group of friends getting together to play. Now they are punished for it. I understand that some 4 stacks are just looking to pub stomp, but some, like mine when I played pvp, were of varied levels of skill which meant that the only advantage we had was communication. And that was not always an advantage as we didn't always talk about the match.

      • I don’t know exactly what’s going on but there doesn’t seem to be much concern for connection quality or skill. As if the algorithm pairs players with anyone on a “first available” basis.

I've been keeping track of my wins and losses over the last week or so just to see what kind of match ups i get in both types of crucible. For both games are super 1 sided. My last week in QM as been pretty much horrible. On average you can expect getting 1 win with 3 losses, and sometimes you get a 2 or 3 win streak. Its like there are only 2 categories it pulls players from, people who are consistently under 1.0 and people who are well above 2.0, usually in QM i'm somewhere between those two, but either you get matched with a lot of sub 1.0 players and its a cakewalk and then the next several games match you up against players well above my/my teams skill level and its just demoralizing to play. Competitive seems a bit better. Currently its nearly 50/50 so i make a little progress but lose most of it because the matchmaking system is just plain bad. EVERY game is a landslide for one team or the other, there is nothing close, even when it looks to be all solo queue players, one team is super stacked, making it no contest. Also i have seen far too many games where one team has one or two players abandon the match. Whatever the current punishment is, it needs to be doubled or tripled, or possibly even disallowing people who abandon games on a regular basis should be restricted on how often they are allowed to play competitive. I hate that i'm getting punished for my teammates leaving if anything the loss at that point shouldn't count against me 2v4 isn't fair, if anything it should end the match and neither team advances or loses. Update, after 4 no contest landslide victories for the opposing team it let me win 1 close game and then another landslide loss after that. Clearly its working for someone, just not me.
