Halo: CE Weapons and which to use

In alphabetical order. All difficulty is assumed Legendary because that’s where what’s good and what’s not is most clear. Assault Rifle: Utter garbage. You often begin levels with it; dispose of it for pretty much anything else ASAP. Near zero damage to shields and horrible accuracy make it worthless. Needler: Another weapon you should never use, but not because it’s bad or anything, just everything else is so much better. Needles are too slow. Pistol: Widely agreed upon as the best weapon in the game. Best weapon against grunts, kills carrier forms in 2 shots and combat forms in about 4-6. Can instakill hunters. Performs very well at range. Only weakness is its low damage against shields, but... Plasma Pistol: The second best weapon in the game. Able to burst down a major elite’s armour after a (very fast in CE) overcharge as it fires as fast as you can mash the trigger. A very versatile weapon with few faults, although it’s not great against flood. Plasma Rifle: About equal damage to the plasma pistol and performs slightly better at longer ranges as well as being better vs flood, but overall worse because of no charge shot. Still a fairly good weapon. Rocket Launcher: Better called a nuke launcher than a rocket launcher because of its sheer damage output, but arguably only useful in a few situations because it’s slooooooow. Everything about it is too slow: the melee, the reload, the rocket itself, your corpse sent flying after you kill yourself with it (the chance of which increases exponentially the longer you have it)...Did I mention the rarity of its ammo? Shotgun: The best anti-Flood weapon in the game. Capable of instakilling them at insane range, and can even one or two shot elites at point blank (although you’ll die before you get there). Don’t use against jackals or sentinels, it’s largely ineffective against them. Sniper Rifle: The best anti-Covenant weapon in the game. Two shot bodyshotting a red elite on legendary is no joke. Pretty much a more powerful pistol that has a longer reload and less ammo as well as no unscoped aim assist. Near zero damage against Flood and Sentinels, however. Now, since not all the levels are the same, here’s what each level should have you using: Pillar of Autumn: Plasma Pistol/Pistol Halo: Plasma Pistol/Pistol, swap plasma pistol for sniper once available Truth and Reconciliation: Sniper/Plasma Pistol. Noob combo the gold elites. Silent Cartographer: Pistol/Plasma Pistol Assault on the Control Room: Plasma Pistol/ Pistol for most of it, feel free to swap the pistol for the sniper if you feel lucky. Use the Scorpion/Ghost instead of a weapon whenever possible. 343 Guilty Spark: Pistol/Shotgun. Easiest level in the game. The Library: Pistol/Shotgun. Prioritise the shotgun over all else - use the pistol for anything at a longer range. Two Betrayals: Only consistent weapon is the plasma pistol. Use the shotgun when flood appear, the rocket launcher against the wraith at the start as well as the gold elite, the pistol for a longer reach and headshots, hell even the plasma rifle for ranged anti-flood work when you run out of pistol ammo (which you will). Use the banshee/ghost instead of a weapon whenever possible. Keyes: Always keep a Shotgun, have the other slot as a plasma pistol/pistol depending on whether you’re facing covenant/flood respectively. The Maw: Shotgun/either pistol again, but once you reach the armoury swap the pistol you’ve been using for a rocket launcher - the shotgun will carry you through the flood in the rest of the level. Rocket any covenant because there’s a lot of ammo for it here.

A 60 round magazine that can be delivered in seconds is pretty devastating.

    • The Plasma Pistol and normal Pistol are really the only two weapons you'll need for most of the game. With those two and a fair bit of accuracy you can kill anything in 1-2 shots. The only exception for me would be the flood heavy levels (Library, 343 GS, etc) where you want to use the Assault Rifle/Shotgun combo. Short bursts from the assault rifle take down huge groups of flood while the shotgun will take out any other form in 1 hit.

      • Halo: CE is the only Halo game I finished on Legendary and that was back on the original Xbox, not the widescreen high FPS remaster. Best tip I can give you is to take those vehicles into places they aren't supposed to go. You can back a Warthog into the room with the Silent Cartographer. It's not easy but becomes a huge help. Don't underestimate the Assault Rifle. You can use a plasma pistol to take down shields and then follow it up with an Assault Rifle burst. You can also us it to quickly dispatch the little bastards up front before tackling the big bastards in back. It will always be a great backup weapon. The Magnum is mostly useful in a few situations where the enemy is too far to return fire. The first time you land on Halo is the best time to use it because there are lots of open spaces and Elites that can't match your range. Generally you want to use your Magnum from range as often as possible. The needler is essential for taking out high health and shielded enemies without risk to yourself. Don't waste shots on the little bastards. The only drawback I've seen other than limited ammo is the tendency for the needler to start a chain of explosions that could kill you. This even applies to easy mode. Later in the game, I'm all about Shotty Snipers. Horde that ammo and run past enemies when you can, because that also saves ammo. Use Snipers for Elites from range and the shotgun for the hordes of flood. For the grunts, use your melee. Rockets become plentiful and are great for Final Run when you have to take down a couple of Wraiths, but Shotgun and Sniper ammo is more useful. Last on my list is the Plasma Rifle. You can use it to take down shields like with the Plasma Pistol but overall the Plasma Rifle is a weapon of last resort.
