The RNG Rolls debate, Do we really need them?

Re add them

Destiny 1 was all about showing your characters progression through gear more so than light level, seeing someone with a perfect roll imago loop that has explosive rolls and rifled barrel made you instantly know what they went through to get it most of the time. I say most of the time because it was random and they could have just gotten lucky on the first try so players wouldn't know for sure what other players went through to get that weapon they could have just gotten lucky where as other players could be up all night dedicated to the drop. That being said RNG rolls had a lot of downsides, for starters the idea of gear being valued on complete chance is bad in concept. If i need a good roll grasp of malok for crucible then it could take me anywhere from 1 drop to 20 or even 50 drops depending on how lucky i am. Its a grind based on luck where as it should be a combination of luck and progression. RNG rolls provided many upsides, most notably making gear feel unique and varied. When i got the weapon i had been waiting for to drop, i would instantly go check its perk in excitement to see whether or not it was a good roll. This makes getting a drop fun and was almost soley provided by the fact we had randomised loot. So when bungie removed this it was expected that this feeling would be provided by something else perhaps a new mechanic. Masterworks really didn't fully succeed at doing this, a masterworks weapon is nice and all but when one drops i see myself dismantling it to upgrade when of my other weapons. Don't get me wrong i enjoy getting a master works weapon more than an average weapon but that feeling doesn't come close to RNG rolls. To this i say what RNG rolls provided was never replaced when they were removed but its not as simple as re adding in the mechanic it provided problems and i think it should have been tweaked and built upon rather than cut out. What would i do? Bring RNG rolls back but add in a crafting or 'merging' mechanic that allows players to grind for specific rolls without it being RNG based. You could have it so you have 2 uriels gifts with unique rolls and the game allows you to combine them and choose which perks you want to keep. You could even integrate weapon mods into this that allow you add specific perks or bonuses allowing players to grind for better gear rather than it being determined by the roll of a dice. This would make each drop feel like we were working towards something, if i wanted a better devils with perfect perks, with this system i wouldn't mind getting a couple with different perks just to combine it into a sort of uber better devils. I think its better to have a sort of hybrid system because it would allow players to work for gear whilst keeping the element of randomness in. Keep in mind this is just my subjective opinion on what should happen to the weapon system
