Physics in Destiny

I applied simple physics math to all three classes: titan, warlock, and hunter to find out how fast they really run. The titan was tested with and without the Dunmarchers. The warlock was tested with and without the Transverse steps. The hunter was tested with and without the stompees. All classes were tested in the exacted same area in the tower during the same time. I began by researching the height of the classes, of which I could not find information on them. The only information I could find is that they had “various heights”. So I went to the tower and compared my titan to the NPC’s and Shax. After doing so I assumed the titan had a height of approximately 1.85 meters or 6.1 feet. From there I actually measured my titan on my television screen straight on to avoid variations. I got a height of 20 inches. So 20 inches =1.85 meters in this calculation. Next, I compared and measured the warlock and hunter and found them to be at the same height as my titan, 20 inches = 1.85 meters. Next I measured a specific section of railing between two points straight on to avoid variations again and got 56 inches. So to find how long the railing is in meters: 56''/20''=2.8. 2.8·1.85=5.18m So the railing length is 5.18 meters long. Next I timed my titan as he ran the 5.18 meter course three times to get an average change in time. My titan ran to the right in 1.06 seconds for the set course without Dunmarchers on. So let’s find his final velocity (V=S/T=V=518m/1.06m v=4.89 m/S) So now that we know the titans velocity of 4.89 meters per second we just need to convert it to miles per hour: (4.89 m/S·3600/1·1/1609 =10.94mph) Here we can see the titan’s sprinting speed to be 10.94 miles per hour. I conducted the same calculations with Dunmarchers equipped and came up with a velocity of 11.9 miles per hour. This shows the gear really does make a significant difference in the speed of the character. Next up we have the warlock, who runs at 4.98 meters per second without the Transverse steps. Taking into account the miles per hour conversion equation from above we can figure out the warlock’s running speed to be 11.14 miles per hour. The warlock then places on the Transverse steps and runs at 5.82 meters per second , or, 13.02 miles per hour. This definitively shows, through physics, that the warlock is faster than the titan. Finally, we come to the hunter. The hunter starts out without the stompees, and runs at 5.34 meters per second. Again, take into account the miles per hour conversion equation from above and it can be seen that the hunter runs 11.95 miles per hour. Lastly, the hunter places on the stompees and runs at 5.89 meters per second which is 13.17 miles per hour. This definitively proves, through physics, that the hunter is not only faster than the warlock it is also faster than the titan ending that argument over who is that fastest class. All classes were timed running 3-5 times to get an accurate result. They were all run on the same day at the same time period over the same course. None of the classes used speed enhancing weapons e.g. the quick fang or mida multi-tool. Also all classes used a base mobility of 6. Timothy Younglove TB Awesome13 (Gamer Tag)

  • Actual science is hard. I suppose that's why we got this instead. I was griping about this exact thing with some of my pals - me playing a hunter and running a mobility 'build'... lol, I just said 'build in a post about Destiny... I crack myself up. Anyway, here's what you need to know. I have 10 mobility, my pal's titan has 4. In a straight line, from a fixed starting point, I was 0% faster than him. Stats mean functionally nothing. You're welcome.

                      • Why not use Darci on a planetary patrol to rangefind a true distance and run that? Next you should equip all available speed enhancing equipment and see what each classes maximum run speed is.

                      • So, can we add to the fact that the Dreadnaught, a ship the size of Luna, is capable of having it's own artificial gravity and keeping Saturn's rings from repairing itself? The Almighty, a ship almost as big as Mercury, being that close to an inner system planet and tearing it apart not even effecting its gravity? How about the Leviathan not tearing apart Nessus by even coming close to it?

                        • This is fine if you want to determine relative speeds of each class, but it wouldn't really work if you wanted to find the actual speed values. The problem is the scale from reality to game depends on the size of the screen you are measuring with. I think you would find your base inch value (20 in your case) would be different if you were to measure say a 24 inch screen versus a 60 inch screen. If the values were the same, that would mean your character grows based on what screen you are using, which you know isn't true within the context of the game. To find the absolute velocities, I recommend finding something in the game world (maybe a public event flag) which has a waypoint that measures your distance (in-game) from the object. Then you can find the time it takes to run a certain distance, assuming you run in a straight line obviously. That might be something fun for you to try out. But like I said, your test is valid for relative speeds and does prove hunters are faster, even if by a negligible amount. I don't know why I wrote such a lengthy reply, I guess your post piqued my interest lol
