Choppy Frame Stuttering (NOT LOW FPS PROBLEM)

Yes, I have the same issue

Same issue, but in another area/after time

135

No choppiness after doing steps (post system spec)

Before stutter video #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FXCCGDdia0 After stutter video #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-WHO7NRgF4 Before stutter video #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A-ZJD0zuu8 After stutter video #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71w0JP8BYcM THIS IS NOT A CASE OF LOW FPS. Monitored framerate is NOT dropping during the stutter. The game mostly runs great during combat between 60-144 fps. Silky smooth. I noticed some real annoying stuttering that gradually gets worse over time (very visible when trying to turn your character quickly), but strangely my FPS was still 60+. It would eventually get bad enough to become more than an annoyance and start to affect gameplay quite a bit. I could even go to orbit and my mouse cursor would skip around while moving it around in the menus with my fps as a solid 144. As soon as I restarted the game - BAM perfectly smooth again. Changing any graphics settings (vsync, aim smoothing, fullscreen, etc.) does not fix the bug. Switching drivers (the bug has been around for a year's-worth of driver updates now) - and even completely changing hardware - does not fix the bug. Most people seem to be getting the stutter the worst/fastest from doing public activities. My current theory is that it still has something to do with clan and/or public player list data piling up in the code and not getting properly cleaned out. What sets this bug apart from other stutter bugs?: 1) The stutter gets worse over time. Destiny 2 does not have the frame stutter immediately after starting the game. Noticeable difference after ~30-60 minutes of gameplay. Early on, you might not notice it, but your brain does. 2) You can temporarily fix the stutter by restarting the game. Reportedly, some people get it to reset by returning to orbit... but not always. 3) Not a mouse polling issue. Still occurs with mouse disconnected and playing with only a controller. 4) Framerate does not drop precisely during the micro-stutter, nor after the stutter gets worse. OUTDATED bug reproduction info:
This was initially a reliable way to reproduce the issue, but a lot has changed since then. It is still reproducible via these steps, but the bug is not as suddenly noticeable as it used to be): I have managed to reproduce this choppiness bug every time. I'd be interested in seeing if the exact same thing can be done by others with different rig setups: 1. Start up fresh game 2. Go to Artifact's Edge on Nessus and wait for public event - the Cabal Drill event. 3. AS SOON AS PUBLIC EVENT BEGINS (sky darkens, etc.) the choppiness starts. Only a game restart will fix this. Going back to orbit, or even loading into another area, the strange stuttering persists until game restart. I have noticed the game doing this "dropped frames" thing elsewhere - maybe just over time it gets worse. But this one public event was like night and day when it started.
System info:
BattleTag: Tychoid#1881 Configuration Info CPU: Intel Xeon W3520 @ 2.67GHz GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 4GB RAM: 12GB DDR3 ECC @ 1066MHz Game installed on SSD - in /Program Files/ Run as Administrator Triple monitor setup (144hz monitor main/game fullscreen is center monitor) All settings maxed (Vsync @ 144, Motion blur off, Film grain off, 1920x1080, 100% scaling) Various other settings tried in combination with no change in stutter bug GPU Driver Version: Nvidia 388.00 (thru 399.24) Operating System: Window 10 Pro 64bit (version 1703) No antivirus Possibly related processes: Rainmeter Steam friends list Battle.net friends list DisplayFusion Pro Chrome MSI Afterburner (Turned off with no change) RivaTunerStatisticsServer (Turned off with no change) Tested with and without numerous screen capture softwares (Nvidia/Rivatuner/etc.) Issue Information Destination/Activity: Nessus/Public Event Description: Massive game/frame suttering after public event starts. Continuously doing public events is still the best/fastest way I have found to reproduce this issue. Edit Sept. 7 2018: Still an issue. Have to restart the game every hour or so to reset the stutter. Many people reporting it being worse since Forsaken (more active clan & player lists aggravating the issue?) Edit March 7 2019: Hasn't been fixed yet. Some evidence seems to show that the stuttering is in part triggered or made worse by FPS going over 60. So the more powerful your hardware, the worse you will see this bug. Which may explain why it was reported more frequently by people with higher end GPUs (1080s, 2080s, AMD equivalents, etc.). It would also match up with other 'above-60fps' engine bugs Destiny 2 has had in the past: weapon effect animations, jump pads, etc. Perhaps this coupled with something in public areas is causing the stuttering to gradually get worse.

  • Having the exact same issue, started playing a few days ago as i got it for free in the giveaway promotion. Sucks to hear this has been a problem for over a year now. I can play perfectly for about an hour before the game starts to stutter and freeze up, its really irritating and the only fix ive found is resetting the client. tried lowering settings and changing up my resolution but nothing seems to be sorting it out. Eagerly awaiting a fix as im enjoying playing.

None of the steps listed changed it for me. Frames per second say 100-200. But there's this stutter, it's really noticeable if there's something flying in the background it just jumps around and if I stop to watch it, it moves silky smooth. The only difference for me is, that it was happening 100% of the time. I got the game in the nov free, have 2080ti sli.

    • I just upgraded my monitor to the Acer Predator 120 Hz 1440P Gsync. It was working great on my GTX 980. Now I just installed a new RTX 2080 and, and it technically runs great, but is choppy as heck. I mean the frames say they are good, but something is making it stutter and chop a ton.

        • Just adding to the pile here; I'm receiving this glitch as well. I have an older, not terribly powerful rig, but I never had an issue playing for long periods of time on low settings. Ever since Forsaken though, my FPS will plummet after about an hour of play time. Tried all the standard fixes, nothing has worked. • Just to add to the fire, I just got an Acer Predator, 144Hz Gsync, and it took all of 5 minutes for the screen to become a jittery mess! I have been experiencing this issue on and off for a year now, and I even changed hardware from Ryzen 1700 to Core 8600k. Intel made it almost non existent at 60Hz. Sadly, 144 Hz goodness is not in my future... Intel Core i5 8600k MSI GTX 1070 16gb ram @ 3200MHz Game and windows on separate SSD Acer Predator 144Hz Gsync

          • Saw something online and tested it, worked a little bit in PVE but Crucible was still unplayable for me. Yall should give it a try, but it doesn't sound safe. Disabling Windows Defender's real time scanning in the Threat Protection tab could reduce your stuttering in-game. I usually stutter hard in the Tower or the free-roam areas, but it seemed to go away when I disabled it. Once again, test it at your own risk. Hopefully Bungie fixes the stuttering :(

            • This problem just started for me. My roommate and I had the same Asus 2k gsync monitor and similar PC specs, but he had the issue and I did not. I just bought a 3440x1440p monitor and use my old display as a secondary monitor. Now I have the stuttering on my new monitor. Super frustrating.

              • Adding my name to the list of people that experience the same thing as you. I can get a constant 120fps, and when I turn it looks just as you described as "Jittery". The frames are not dropping, and nothing I do seems to fix it. There are parts of the game that look smooth and run amazing, but there are parts that look so jittery it hurts my eyes. I really hope they fix this! CPU: 7700k GPU: EVGA 1070 SSC 8gb RAM: 16gb MOBO: Asus Maximus Hero IX

              • I just wanted to chime in and say I too am having a newfound issue with an uncontrollable screen stutter. It seems random and differs in length etc. Absolute monster of a PC that had been eating this and every other game for lunch @ 100hz gsync. Now, it runs great until a stutter (boom, dead in crucible). :( Started after last maintenance patch.

              • Same issue here. I just now found this thread after months of trying to resolve this issue. I just upgraded from a gtx 970 to a 2080 ti and the issue persists. I thought it was my gpu on my higher resolution monitor causing the issue and I'm SO RELIEVED to find this thread. This issue needs to be resolved in a serious way.

Same issue 1080ti - gsync ; only occurs in public open planets. FPS shows stable 130 but feels like it gets worse and worse overtime, staying consistently bad & erratic framerate - smooth 130 / chop / smooth 130 over and over again like once per second. Gets better once re-orbit or restart. Tried all the fixes here https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTechSupport/comments/8xahza/destiny_2_troubleshooting_guides_framerate/e21w96b/ And programs like smoothping to re-route my internet. This is the reason I quit destiny months ago, was hoping this would be fixed by now. I see ALLOT of GTX 10xx series cards listed here, is this a nvidia driver issue? If you have a Radeon card with this issue please post. Or if one of you upgraded to new 20xx Nvidia card , did problem disappear ?

                • Dropping below 60fps with vsync enabled causes major stutter, but becuase I cannot reach a solid 60fps I need to turn Vsync off yet I have the same problem. I love the game but this is giving me a head ache and it needs to be fixed. Major optimisation updates should have been released by now as this is really bad. Not sure how they've let it go on for so long.

Cant believe this has been ignored for so long .... I've had it since day one. Not a single fix anywhere. Does my head in ... so distracting that i actually get to a point where i couldn't be bothered playing!! SPECS: i7 8700K, 1080Ti, Samsung SSD, 32G RAM. Just a side note that i noticed last night: SP, Strikes & Adventures are all good. No stutter. But anything thats in the live game world is choppy, and seems to be worse in Dark areas with sections of bright light like HIVE eggs or glowing crystals.

                      • Upvoting and commenting to gain traction, please bungie the game is unplayable in this state. Been playing since beta semiconsistently and just yesterday the stuttering issue just occurred. It happens when I launch the game however, so I cannot play at all for any amount of time.
