Choppy Frame Stuttering (NOT LOW FPS PROBLEM)

Yes, I have the same issue

Same issue, but in another area/after time

No choppiness after doing steps (post system spec)

Before stutter video #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FXCCGDdia0 After stutter video #1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-WHO7NRgF4 Before stutter video #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A-ZJD0zuu8 After stutter video #2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71w0JP8BYcM THIS IS NOT A CASE OF LOW FPS. Monitored framerate is NOT dropping during the stutter. The game mostly runs great during combat between 60-144 fps. Silky smooth. I noticed some real annoying stuttering that gradually gets worse over time (very visible when trying to turn your character quickly), but strangely my FPS was still 60+. It would eventually get bad enough to become more than an annoyance and start to affect gameplay quite a bit. I could even go to orbit and my mouse cursor would skip around while moving it around in the menus with my fps as a solid 144. As soon as I restarted the game - BAM perfectly smooth again. Changing any graphics settings (vsync, aim smoothing, fullscreen, etc.) does not fix the bug. Switching drivers (the bug has been around for a year's-worth of driver updates now) - and even completely changing hardware - does not fix the bug. Most people seem to be getting the stutter the worst/fastest from doing public activities. My current theory is that it still has something to do with clan and/or public player list data piling up in the code and not getting properly cleaned out. What sets this bug apart from other stutter bugs?: 1) The stutter gets worse over time. Destiny 2 does not have the frame stutter immediately after starting the game. Noticeable difference after ~30-60 minutes of gameplay. Early on, you might not notice it, but your brain does. 2) You can temporarily fix the stutter by restarting the game. Reportedly, some people get it to reset by returning to orbit... but not always. 3) Not a mouse polling issue. Still occurs with mouse disconnected and playing with only a controller. 4) Framerate does not drop precisely during the micro-stutter, nor after the stutter gets worse. OUTDATED bug reproduction info:
This was initially a reliable way to reproduce the issue, but a lot has changed since then. It is still reproducible via these steps, but the bug is not as suddenly noticeable as it used to be): I have managed to reproduce this choppiness bug every time. I'd be interested in seeing if the exact same thing can be done by others with different rig setups: 1. Start up fresh game 2. Go to Artifact's Edge on Nessus and wait for public event - the Cabal Drill event. 3. AS SOON AS PUBLIC EVENT BEGINS (sky darkens, etc.) the choppiness starts. Only a game restart will fix this. Going back to orbit, or even loading into another area, the strange stuttering persists until game restart. I have noticed the game doing this "dropped frames" thing elsewhere - maybe just over time it gets worse. But this one public event was like night and day when it started.
System info:
BattleTag: Tychoid#1881 Configuration Info CPU: Intel Xeon W3520 @ 2.67GHz GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 4GB RAM: 12GB DDR3 ECC @ 1066MHz Game installed on SSD - in /Program Files/ Run as Administrator Triple monitor setup (144hz monitor main/game fullscreen is center monitor) All settings maxed (Vsync @ 144, Motion blur off, Film grain off, 1920x1080, 100% scaling) Various other settings tried in combination with no change in stutter bug GPU Driver Version: Nvidia 388.00 (thru 399.24) Operating System: Window 10 Pro 64bit (version 1703) No antivirus Possibly related processes: Rainmeter Steam friends list Battle.net friends list DisplayFusion Pro Chrome MSI Afterburner (Turned off with no change) RivaTunerStatisticsServer (Turned off with no change) Tested with and without numerous screen capture softwares (Nvidia/Rivatuner/etc.) Issue Information Destination/Activity: Nessus/Public Event Description: Massive game/frame suttering after public event starts. Continuously doing public events is still the best/fastest way I have found to reproduce this issue. Edit Sept. 7 2018: Still an issue. Have to restart the game every hour or so to reset the stutter. Many people reporting it being worse since Forsaken (more active clan & player lists aggravating the issue?) Edit March 7 2019: Hasn't been fixed yet. Some evidence seems to show that the stuttering is in part triggered or made worse by FPS going over 60. So the more powerful your hardware, the worse you will see this bug. Which may explain why it was reported more frequently by people with higher end GPUs (1080s, 2080s, AMD equivalents, etc.). It would also match up with other 'above-60fps' engine bugs Destiny 2 has had in the past: weapon effect animations, jump pads, etc. Perhaps this coupled with something in public areas is causing the stuttering to gradually get worse.

  • after some really extensive tinkering with the same issue, I DO NOT think is the game, rather Windows 10. Why? D2 is not the only game that does it. The more Windows 10 gets updated, the more issues I have. Fresh install of windows does NOT fix the issue. I DID, however, use memory cleaner, emptystandbylist.exe, and set it to clean memory every 5 minutes, and the problem is a LOT less. try it and see. Here are some links: https://www.koshyjohn.com/software/memclean/ Just set options to trim processes working set every 5 minutes and clear system cache every 5 minutes. https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/7a0763/standby_memory_issue_causing_stutters_on_creators/ Just follow the guide. After I did these steps....among a million others, my games are MUCH less skippy. Try it out.

Running D2 on a 144hz 1440p monitor on a RX480 8GB with above 100FPS here, I noticed that stutters would show up and be most annoying while playing PvP. I tried the 'turn off Steam friends' fix and it seemed to work for me. Still no permanent solution since steam friends are important to me to see whos up for raids etc.. • I seem to be having the same issue as stated in the post above, and I believe the phenomenon is called memory leaking. It not only does it only occur for destiny 2, but this same problem first surfaced back at the launch of forsaken. The issue used to be linked to clans, and was later hot-fixed, but the problem has recently resurfaced for me following the season of dawn launch. I have tried just about everything I've read online, and even going as far as to factory reset my laptop but nothing seems to work. I hope it's not true, but unless Bungo recognizes the problem, ill just have to hope a good Samaritan from the help forum has the answers I seek to this reacquiring visual nightmare...

      • Hi, after buying my 1440p 144hz monitor and enjoying it immensely, I too had stuttering/lag even though I was constantly at 120-150 fps. The fix for me was not to enable V-Sync. V-Sync actually makes it worse due to how it functions. If you can't maintain 144fps then it drops down to 60 automatically. Instead, I have V-Sync off and a framerate cap of 200. Don't ask me why but it completely cleared up my issue. • hi currently having this issue now, strange that i havent encountered this during the steam launch having just encountered it very recently - about a week now. Seems just about the time the recent nvidia driver update for the Halo Reach. That could have been the trigger for my stuttering but not 100 percent sure.

Guys, guys! I've just fixed the stuttering by going offline in Steam friends. That's crazy I know, but I saw a guy posted this on Steam forums and this was the only thing that fixed the stuttering for me. I have tried everything before and it was stuttering every 3-4 seconds. The guy said it happens if you have lots of friends on your Steam list and the game tries to update something constantly. I had 1000+ friends and he had 800.

The game runs fine oddly enough when I'm single PC streaming. My FPS goes to like 60 when streaming and I get 0 issues. When I am playing off stream, and utilizing my whole system for Destiny 2, I can get consistent 80-140 frames yet significant stuttering that drops it in the 70's. GPU utilization is 90%+ whether streaming or not. This system should have no issues with the game. I do not have enough space to run it off my SSD, so its running off the HDD. Ideas??

            • RTX 2060 + i7 9600. Framerate capped to 60 fps and never drops below that. CPU and GPU usage never above 50% but after an hour I have unplayable stuttering every 3-4 seconds. Running a 144hz monitor, but changing the resolution down then back up fixes it for a minute or two but it goes right back

            • I’m having the same issues. Posted FPS never shows a drop, but after about 2 hours of gameplay it’s almost like everything is running in slow motion. Will start out just choppy then work it’s way into being worse. Then it will randomly snap back into smooth gameplay for anywhere to a few seconds to a few minutes then slow down again. All without showing a dip in FPS.

              • I need to restart the game within the first 40 minutes or 1 hour. Then back to normal. As I do not play more than two hours in a row I could not notice if I need to restart again. Still, it's frustrating. I've tried several solutions and nothing ...

              • bump, i recently notice the issue while playing with the setting i had vsync off and in some strikes and crucible i noticed like a little Stuttering didn't care that much but afer playing for hours multiple public events it got worse to the point that now am playing at 60hz locked with vsync on , and sometimes my frames drop below 40 because of that :(

              • So I recently encountered this stuttering when switching to the PC build of Destiny 2. I can't promise it'll work for everyone, but I found that using my XB1 controller wirelessly with the game was causing the stutter. Switching to a wired connection fixed the stutter completely. If you're using a controller to play the game, try plugging it in instead if you're using it wirelessly?

              • yeah i haven't been able to find a fix either. then i've seen practically no topics in regards to borderless windowed being off-center since everyone apparently just gives up on it and uses windowed fullscreen. fullscreen is the only mode that runs well for me, and that's only assuming i don't task switch. the more i task switch, the worse it runs. i'm not sure it's entirely tied to beefy gpus or fps being unlocked either--at least not solely. i'm running what's basically low end nowadays (r9 380, i5 4570, 8gb ddr3) with fps capped at 60 and still run into the same issue. exactly as mentioned in the op--fps is smooth at 60 and doesn't fluctuate according to overlay or logs but it just gets these tiny little irritating jitters that worsens over time. i actually think i had the same problem in nier automata, except that game's fullscreen didn't poop the bed when i task switched so it wasn't quite as annoying. with destiny 2's reliance on third party apps due to a lack of in-game tools/qol it'd be nice if i could comfortably task switch.

                  • I have a Ryzen 5 3600 with GTX 1080 and get hitching every 30 seconds or so. I just did laps in a circle in the main landing area in the tower. I would run in a wide circle, meaning mouse would move slowly. Well, towards the end of every lap my mouse would still be moving inward but my screen would hitch and my character would run straight. This can be recreated consistently.

Have had nothing but stuttering and freezing issues since "upgrade". seems to be issues with new drivers of course but I've found playing without any resolution scaling "super sampling" has helped a little bit. still extremely annoying. Especially since I went all in this PC life since they announced cross save. Is there anything that can be done. I've turned every post processing POS AMD item off in Settings already. Is it possible Freesync is causing the problem?

Not the beefiest rig in the world GTX1060 3GB i5-7400 3GHz 8GB RAM One situation I can consistently recreate is the first wave in Gambit Prime. If I throw a grenade at the first wave, my game will come just shy of completely freezing. I can alt-tab out and see that nothing is really wrong on my computer's end. No spikes in RAM, GPU, or CPU. Ideally, I'd like to get an answer to this. But it's been six months with no answer, what's another six months?
