Argumentative

Are you for or against the legalization of recreational marijuana use? I'd like any opinion or statement backed by legitimate articles/studies.

  • Last time I provided stats stating why weed was dangerous and unfit for society, all I got in response was "muh body". So I'll just say that I don't think it should be used recreationally, but I think that it should have a simple fine attached to it instead of years in jail (except for smoking while driving).

    • Illegalization of cannabis puts nonviolent people behind bars, wastes all our tax money, and is frankly immoral. When I partake in the substance, I may not get much done, but I'm hurting no one. I think someone once quoted, when possession of a drug is the most dangerous thing about it, there's a problem.

    • I don't care if you smoke the devil's lettuce or not. Personally sucking off plant smoke isn't for me (what am I, a 'bundle of sticks'). My issue with it would be how you'd enforce regulation. It's like alcohol, but harder to detect.

        • I can't back my opinion that people should be allowed to do what they want to their bodies if it doesn't harm others with a study. That's just a personal bias I have. Is this a dynamic issue, that may open up different pathways by which others may be harmed through the legalization of marijuana? Yes, it is. However I would also argue the war on drugs hasn't exactly been very successful in doing the opposite. Complete non sequitur, but I did want to hear your opinion on the NFL's reactions to Trump's comments today, Camm. I'm feel like yours is an interesting point of view on the situation.

          • smoked weed for the first time last night. there was a few of us smoking and another group was drinking we were all fine to drive home they weren't. although that 10 minute drive felt like an hour I never stalled it never crossed my lane never lost focus. never should have been illegal imo.

              • I have a couple points on marijuana legalization. A) If the most dangerous part of a drug is the punishment it carries if you're caught with its possession, the recreational and/or medical status of the drug should be revisited. It's mathematically impossible to overdose on marijuana; the amount you would have to ingest is too large for the amount of time you would have to do it in to have a lethal effect. B) My only balk at full recreational legalization is that we don't have a way of addressing public intoxication with marijuana. To my knowledge, there is not yet a field test for marijuana that can determine intoxication level. Unlike alcohol, marijuana effects different people in different ways. Alcohol generally effects people in a linear fashion with regards to drink numbers, ABV, and the person's height/weight. Marijuana doesn't work the same way, and we don't have a "breathalyzer for weed" type test.

                      • I would prefer it to be decriminalized. I don't smoke it and never plan to, but couldn't give a shit if others do and certainly don't want to pay for them to be locked up for it.

No articles or studies necessary in my opinion. The entire debate should easily be decided by the fact that cannabis consumption is a victimless crime. And when you endorse laws that create these victimless crimes, you're essentially saying "I believe the government knows what's best for me more than I do". And that's just silly. Laws should be put in place to protect us from other people. Not to protect us from ourselves.

                                • Portugals decriminalization of drugs serves as a great rebuttal to all the scaremongering logic behind carrying on with Prohibition, even though America should have learned back in the 1920s what Prohibition causes. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/portugal-decriminalised-drugs-14-years-ago-and-now-hardly-anyone-dies-from-overdosing-10301780.html The current "War on Drugs" approach is a catastrophic failure to learn from history, and those who propogate it have their hands soaked in untold blood and misery.

                                • Decriminalisation is a far better option than outright legalising it. While through legalisation, we can regulate and thus collect taxes and ensure that their is no shady mixing going on, there ARE health affects from smoking. Period. Sure, alcohol isn't terribly better. However the difference is alcohol, like tobacco, is very imbedded in culture. Even knowing the health affects, they continue to be legal despite attempts to crack down on them. With marijuana, we are still at the point where we can stop it from being mainstream and embedded deeply within culture. This however, requires people to acknowledge there are health affects and it is just as dangerous to be under the influence as alcohol when it comes from work/driving/etc.

                                  • I'm for legalizing all the drugs and putting the money where it's needed. Think about it. If all the money we spent enforcing drug laws were used instead for paying off our massive debt, we'd be doing SO much better.

You may have already seen this given it's recency in the news cycle, but if you're genuinely interested in studies, here's a study that finds a correlation between cannabis use and bad academic performance (accompanying WaPo article). Now, I'm pro-legalization, and studies like this won't do anything to change that, but they're interesting and useful information nonetheless.
