'You are not a real gamer.'

As much as I'm not a fan of Candy Crush, Call of Duty, and DOTA2, my condescension to those (sorts of) fandoms is largely self-mocking, and I should be more openly objective about it: If you like playing videogames, good. Doing anything that makes you happy (without harming anyone against their will) is self-evidently a good thing. While it's an attitude I'm personally ashamed of, I see it flaunted, brazenly and quite often elsewhere. I'm not calling out you guys necessarily (though many of you), but it's really not very good when people are made to feel excluded from something they enjoy, simply because they go about it a different way than others. Thoughts?

  • I hate the word gamer. It puts this label on people that comes with huge stereotypes made by people who aren’t gamers that often times really isn’t true at all. In my opinion, if you play any kind of game on a regular basis, you are a gamer whether you like it or not.

    • I only play on weekends now because of school, but I have over 14k gamer score so I'm a gamer. I've completed many challenges that should even qualify as hardcore gamer achievements. (Achievements referring to Xbox achievements and other in game milestones)

    • If you are going to ask me then you all likely are not. At all. Unless you take all challenges you partake in seriously then you are not. Not only that but if you don't take on challenges that are seemingly impossible you are not. If you do not take on challenges with the intention to succeed decisively then you are not. These are the basic qualifiers, and regardless I wouldn't worry about fitting someones values. For me it is a lifestyle more than a hobby. So again I don't expect others to fit it or agree with what I have said. I wouldn't ask you to do so either. I would ask you to not worry about whether your values match another's however, do yourselves a favor. Consideration, and further reflecting on whether you agree and disagree with them is a better thing to do.

    • I'd define a gamer as someone who regularly plays video games. This includes people who play (mostly/only) mobile games but they're filthy casuls anyway.

This kinda reminds me of a thread here a few days ago about how you're only a "hardcore gamer" if you're blazing through high level raids (yet putting down the controller once you're done and not bothering with "lesser content" or just, you know, enjoying the game). Elitism is an ugly thing.

        • I don't think you can say you're a gamer unless it's a hobby you're passionate about, regardless of what games you play. Same way that you can't consider you self a movie buff for enjoying a film occasionally, but you can if you religiously watch movies even if it's a genre not many others enjoy.

        • I didn't bother to finish the article. As far as I'm concerned I'm not even a gamer. I'm just a guy who plays video games as one of his hobbies. As much as I enjoy video games, I would rather be out camping, hiking, fishing, shooting or riding ATVs any day over playing video games. These things take more planning and setting up than turning on a console where I currently live, so they get a backseat for now. Anyways my point still stands.

I couldn't bring myself to read that article in full - it just seemed to be repeating itself and whining. I still don't know how to define someone as a 'real gamer'. I don't think it has anything to do with gender, and I refuse to believe it has anything even remotely to do with appearance like the article suggest. I can easily point out people who might not be as much of a game as I am, but that's just stating facts. Just like I'm not as much of a handglider as some people. I can't really comment too much without knowing how to define someone, but for now, the most appropriate response seems to be "Okay, mate. Sure thing." Plus, it's a Kotaku article. So I'm probably gonna go and get a shower.

            • As a "gamer", I don't very well see why anyone would want to call themselves one or be called one anyways... The term doesn't have a positive connotation in my mind. There's nothing wrong with playing games of course, but generally speaking, society doesn't exactly view gamers in the best of lights (understandable to an extent) most of the time. I know that wasn't really what this was about, but eh.

              • People like to bring others down because it makes them feel better about themselves. Its interestjng because not only are those people themselves not happy but they project their unhappyness onto others.
